Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, speaking to a rally of bikers on Saturday, said he could count on police officers "whatever happens," as he once again sought to court cops amid stark political politicization ahead of next year's election.
Appearing alongside thousands of motorcycle-riding supporters in Sao Paulo, the far-right former army captain said the country's state military police forces serve as a support to what he dubbed "my army."
"You are auxiliary to the Armed Forces. I'm sure that, in compliance with law and order, by complying with constitutional provisions, we will be together, whatever happens," Bolsonaro said.
With nearly 490,000 people killed during the pandemic and tensions growing in Latin America's biggest country, Bolsonaro has been seeking the support of Brazil's roughly half a million officers. Brazil's Health Ministry reported 2,037 new COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, and 78,700 new cases.

(21,530 posts)As you may know, Brazil's courts have just vacated the corruption rulings against former President Lula da Silva - who was convicted in the last election year on mere hearsay (from a "witness" kept in a rat-infested dungeon until he fingered him) and with fabricated evidence (a beachfront apartment which actually belonged to someone else).
This allows the very popular, center-left da Silva to run again in '22 - and polls show Bolso (still popular only among the white middle class) has no chance against him at all.
From the above headline though - and everything else we've seen from the "Tropical Trump" - there's good reason to believe he'll attempt a "self-coup" after losing the '22 elections.
Much like his orange friend did - except that in Brazil, it might just work.
As they say, stay tuned.

but now that Biden is in charge and has gotten the pandemic under control here, Brazil has blown right past us.
it is amazing to me that citizens and families have to just sit there and watch their country and loved ones ravaged by death because one guy got elected that wants to ignore a pandemic for his own advantage. You would think this lunatic would not only be removed from office but run out of town on a rail for all the excess death his ignorance has caused... then you turn around and look at drumpf and remember the same thing happened here. and there was nothing we could do but watch thousands die while we waited for an election.

(11,949 posts)But with one huge difference. Trump would have supported him. The US under Biden would likely respond with crippling sanctions and bring others with us.
That may not change the game, but then again it might. Especially if as their election gets closer Biden made that fact known.
