Ron DeSantis Edges Out Trump for President in Straw Poll of Western Conservative Summit

Source: Newsweek

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis won over former President Donald Trump in a straw poll for 2024 presidential candidates conducted by the Western Conservative Summit, the poll's organizer reported Saturday.

DeSantis led the poll with 74 percent of voters saying they approved of him as a presidential candidate ahead of Trump's 71 percent. The poll was held online using the approval voting method, where voters selected multiple responses to each question.

Because voters were allowed to make more than one choice, the percentages of the poll add up to more than 100 percent. Poll conductor Frank Attwood told Colorado Politics that the decision to use the approval voting method "minimizes spoilers and sabotage and gives viability and visibility to minor candidates."

The summit is hosted by Colorado Christian University's Centennial Institute, and was hosted both online and in-person, Colorado Politics reported. Around 500 people attended in person at a Denver hotel over the weekend, while tens of thousands of viewers were present virtually, according to the event's organizers.

1. Ron DeSantis - 74.12%
2. Donald Trump - 71.43%
3. Ted Cruz - 42.86%
4. Mike Pompeo - 39.35%
5. Tim Scott 35.58%

Not that I think DeSantis has a chance in hell of getting the nomination, but IMO this is pretty significant in that it proves 45*'s grip on the radical right is slipping.

Which is good. He is ultimately more dangerous than trump.

He could win. Trump can’t. And he is smart. And focused. And has no ethics when it comes to democracy.

The stronger he gets the more trump will attack him. Because trump. I know I’m more optimistic in that opinion than many here. But I think trump has wrecked that party.

DeSantis with strong trump support could win. But it would be close. With trump against him, no chance. Or even sitting on the sidelines.

I just can’t see trump being a team player.

The hardcore conservatives love DeSantis. But the folks still flying the trump flags? It’s trump or no one. Cult of personality.

They hate the thought of Democrats controlling the govt, but many of them will stick out their bottom lip & stay home if they dont get THEIR man trump. Thats how they lost the Senate; believing the "why bother, its rigged" bullshit. Enough in solid red areas bought it & stayed home. And LOST

Just being from Florida means he starts out in a huge hole among independents. Many look at Florida man as the butt of jokes.

He may hold onto 65 million or so of Trump voters and lose the election by 15 million votes and lose every state Trump lost, and maybe even lose NC and come close to losing TX.

America’s Next Authoritarian Will Be Much More Competent
Trump was ineffective and easily beaten. A future strongman won’t be.

Make no mistake: The attempt to harness Trumpism—without Trump, but with calculated, refined, and smarter political talent—is coming. And it won’t be easy to make the next Trumpist a one-term president.

At the moment, the Democratic Party risks celebrating Trump’s loss and moving on—an acute danger, especially because many of its constituencies, the ones that drove Trump’s loss, are understandably tired. A political nap for a few years probably looks appealing to many who opposed Trump, but the real message of this election is not that Trump lost and Democrats triumphed. It’s that a weak and untalented politician lost, while the rest of his party has completely entrenched its power over every other branch of government: the perfect setup for a talented right-wing populist to sweep into office in 2024. And make no mistake: They’re all thinking about it.
