PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Oregons largest city broke its all-time heat record on Saturday. It could beat the new mark on Sunday.
Forecasters say many Pacific Northwest communities may sweat through the hottest days in their histories as temperatures soar during a heat wave that has sent residents scrambling for relief.
Stores sold out of portable air conditioners and fans, hospitals canceled outdoor vaccination clinics, cities opened cooling centers, baseball teams canceled or moved up weekend games, and utilities braced for possible power outages.
Portland, Oregon, reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius) Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The previous heat record for Oregons largest city was 107 F (41.7 C), a mark hit in 1965 and 1981.

(5,688 posts)and all we had were house fans that did nothing.
Trust me, I completely sympathize. Problem with us as the closest place to buy all that in the 1980s and early to mid 1990s was in Middletown NY, which was a 90 mile round trip and we couldn't afford to but them even if we wanted.

(5,688 posts)Sells is near 4000. And I'm originally from a cold weather state. We got up to 117 three days in a row.
We are about 15-20 degrees above normal right now.

Again, your point?

But I'm planning to stay indoors as much as possible. I don't do well in the heat.

(3,427 posts)Dew points today in Western Washington are in the 60s, which is rather high for this area. It's not a "dry heat."

(33,323 posts)We're scorching, but it's always 5 degrees hotter down there.
I'd be on the coast today, in the water.

(506 posts)Currently 101 degrees. Previous all-time record was 91. Just got an alert for 3 youths having trouble staying above water in Ocean Shores. Coast guard enroute.

(5,294 posts)don't have air conditioning, as generations grew up thinking "it never gets that hot."
Right now I'm away, but am planning to get estimates for adding central air when I get back.

(19,806 posts)A 300 dollar portable AC.
This Heatwave turned those things into just glorified fans they didn't do a whole lot and Central AC runs up to $10,000 we just can't do it.

I sort of want to go pick up some food, but don't want to get out in the traffic. I guess I'll be cooking at home tonite.

(4,373 posts)Summer was like 100s (40 , 50 days in a row) and dry dry. Texaas cattlemen were in
bad shape. No grass..feed for their herds. Used to see lots of semis hauling
hay south on I35. Wichita was looking
at getting water supply from el dorado lake. This regional ,
annual drought crap seems to vary..year to year..around the
world....it will, like the pandemic, require sacrifice to fix, if possible....
