Canada Weather: Heat Hits Record 46.6C As US North-West Also Sizzles
Source: BBC News
(1 hr ago). Canada has recorded its highest ever temperature as the country's west and the US Pacific north-west frazzle in an unprecedented heatwave. Lytton in British Columbia soared to 46.6C (116F) on Sunday, breaking an 84-year-old record, officials said.
A "heat dome" - static high pressure acting like a lid on a cooking pot - has set records in many other areas. The US and Canada have both warned citizens of "dangerous" heat levels that could persist this week.
Experts say that climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. However, linking any single event to global warming is complicated.
BBC forecaster Nick Miller says that "heat dome" isn't a strictly defined meteorological term but has become associated with describing large areas of high pressure, leading to clear skies and hot sunny days. The longer the high pressure pattern lasts, the longer the heatwave is and temperatures can build day by day...

(1,336 posts)because it is so very unusual, many homes don't have air conditioning -- 99% of the time it isn't needed. My niece who lives just south of Vancouver sent me a pic of her thermostat last evening -- it read 34C (93F). It was suggested that she and hubby take up residence in a hotel for the week. I think she's going to do it!

(60,071 posts)I just sat in the shade, drank gin and tonic, and slept away the day. I didn't venture out until night when it got down to 90 degrees.
I later learned that alcohol will screw up your ability to regulate your internal heat for several days going forward. Drink water

It's weirdly cool here in Austin. It's been a very mild
summer so far.

(802 posts)While strolling down the street one day in the merry, merry, month of May there was a funeral parlor in the small town I was living in at the time that had a flashing temperature sign that displayed the local temp; first in Fahrenheit, then in Centigrade.
To exercise my brain I developed 2 little formulas to convert C to F or F to C.
For C to F
Double C, subtract 10% of the answer from the answer then add 32 degrees.
For F to C:
Subtract 32 degrees, add 10% of the answer to the answer, divide by 2
You should be within 1 degree.
For C to F
Double C, subtract 10% of the answer from the answer then add 32 degrees.
46.6 x 2 = 93.2
- 9.3 = 83.9
83.9 + 32 =115.9
