No. 3 House Democrat Steps Into Ohio Race to Head Off a Sanders Acolyte

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON -- Early last year, as Bernie Sanders was surging through the first Democratic presidential primary races, Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, a kingmaker in his state, stepped in to endorse Joseph R. Biden Jr. before the primary there, helping vault the former vice president to the nomination.

On Tuesday, Mr. Clyburn, the No. 3 House Democrat, took aim at one of Mr. Sanders's most outspoken acolytes, Nina Turner, a hero to the left who is surging in her campaign in Ohio to claim the Cleveland-based congressional seat vacated by the housing secretary, Marcia L. Fudge.

In a rare intervention into a party primary, Mr. Clyburn, a veteran lawmaker and the highest-ranking Black member of Congress, endorsed Shontel Brown, Ms. Turner's leading opponent.

He said his decision to back Ms. Brown, the chairwoman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, was not about Mr. Sanders, or even Ms. Turner, who remains the favorite before the contest on Aug. 3 in the heavily Democratic district. But he took a swipe at what he called the "sloganeering" of the party's left flank, which has risen to power with calls for "Medicare for all," and to "abolish ICE" and "defund the police."

I wonder if this was prompted by Killer Mike calling James Clyburn "incredibly stupid" this weekend and Nina Turner responding, "You better talk about it" as she nodded approvingly.

I LOVE Shontel Brown's comment on this:

"As the leader of this party, I am truly skilled in building bridges and doing it without attacking people or insulting them," she said Tuesday. If sent to Washington, she added, "I won't have to start with a long letter of apology."

...."Bowl of Shit" (a derrogatory ref to President Biden) followed by "Incredibly Stupid" (a derrogatory ref to House Majority Whip James Clyburn), says those who made the claims belong no where in the respectable Halls of a Democratic Congress.

I'm not sure what type of people they are endearing themselves to, but it's certainly not the Democratic voters of the gracious Marcia Fudge's district, OH-11.

Shontel Brown will be seated in The House of Representatives by her district because Marcia Fudge's seat requires intellect, commitment, dignity & communication skills beyond juvenile name calling, & a D behind her name.

She will serve her OH-11 district & her fellow Congressional Democrats well. 💙

Thank You, Rep Clyburn

I was going to ask the same about AOC but clearly Biden was not her first choice.

And do the people that support here wonder whether she ever recanted that comment?

Why doesn't Pelosi endorse Brown? After all, she endorsed Joe Kennedy when he primarily challenged Markey for the senate.

8. If you're talking about the "bowl of shit" comment, Tiffany Cross gave her a chance to do so....

....and all she did was bring up Kamala Harris' comments to Biden about busing during a 2019 debate.

https://thegrio.com/2020/12/19/tiffany-cross-nina-turner/

MSNBC host Tiffany Cross challenged former Ohio State Senator and congressional candidate Nina Turner during The Cross Connection on Saturday over Turner’s controversial comments on the presidential election.

Turner, a former Sen. Bernie Sanders presidential campaign co-chair, was interviewed in a July 27 article from The Atlantic where she voiced her disdain with the choices of outgoing President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden.

When Cross asked Turner about her comments regarding Biden and the ability to work with his administration, Turner said her reaction stemmed from the amount of people who were suffering.

Turner furthered emphasized that “disagreement does not mean you cannot work with someone” and noted during the 2019 presidential debates Vice President-elect Kamala Harris called out Biden for his record on race.

The big difference is that Biden and Harris were opponents in a large Democratic Presidential field, Turner and Biden were never opponents and she called Biden one half of that bowl and trump the other half.

NO comparison between the two situations.

As for Pelosi's endorsement, I believe she endorsed Kennedy just a week or two before their primary. I may be wrong, but I suspect both Pelosi and Fudge will wind up endorsing Brown sometime in the near future.

and just giving a blank comment about the ones who support Biden.

That she is unable or unwilling to differentiate says a lot about her.

Then Pelosi would have an enemy in the House when she has a very slim majority as it is. I don't know if that is her thinking but I would not be surprised.

Clyburn backing someone is his opinion, so a news report about it doesn’t belong in LBN.
