"Nightmare Scenario" describes Pence and Birx as having a good working relationship.
Trump, however, "didn't want anyone to exert leadership" on the task force, according to the book.

.............................

In a section of "Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration's Response to the Pandemic That Changed History," Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta described how Dr. Deborah Birx, who became the task force's response coordinator, sought to offer a steady hand when she first joined the group.
.................................

The book noted that the task force's members, which included figures such as Vice President Mike Pence, Health and Human Services secretary Alex Azar, and Housing and Urban Development secretary Ben Carson, lacked "a concrete understanding of the severity of the outbreak."

Birx's impact was immediately felt, with many of its members "desperate for someone besides Azar to take charge," according to the book.

Birx's instinct that the task force had been waiting for an individual with her skills to take the reigns proved to be correct.

The book describes the task force as "a mess" when Birx first arrived, with no individual in charge "in part because that was the way Trump had wanted it."

Seems each day we find out more and more how utterly evil Trump was.

1. Just finished this book last night.

The amount of adults, serving in a professional capacity, yelling and screaming at each other is insane. No wonder nothing got done, every page was about who was fighting with who. I guess that is what Trump wanted. Embarrassing.

2. Hitler, (the original one) used the same technique

He placed multiple people in what would normally be single positions, with unclear chains of authority. It was a perfect way to make sure that nothing got done that he didn't approve of.

I believe that Trump really did read his book....

3. I have a real hard time believing that Trump learned something

from reading a book and used that knowledge in a calculated manner. I think itís far more likely that Trumpís personality leads him to instinctively make those decisions. He absolutely wallows in chaos.

4. If he did read it, he is a better man than I am.

I have tried several times and just couldn't force myself to complete it.

11. I'm with you, tanyev.

People keep giving Chump way too much credit for being able to think ahead, strategize, and plan. He's absolutely not capable of that. Dude operates on instinct, pure and simple. It worked okay for him, at least some of the time, when he was just a real estate developer (give or take a few casino bankruptcies, lol), but when he became potus he was in way, way over his head. He kept trying to do things the way he was used to, but his usual tactics were grossly inadequate to the situation, and he made a fool of himself repeatedly.

I remember early on, before his incompetence became excruciatingly obvious, people were always trying to figure out the reasoning behind his actions. That turned out to be a joke, of course, since reasoning is one of the many higher cognitive functions that he is not capable of, but it was a while before all the people who thought he was playing 3 dimensional chess figured out that he didn't even know how to play checkers!

5. I can imagine

Everyone is constantly in danger of being fired. Trump thrives on this by every single account.

8. Not that evil doesn't exist, or that trump isn't evil.

But Iím not sure this is an example of trump being evil. Heís a narcissist, allowing other people to receive attention in any form is anathema to him. This is just his nature. Choosing a person like trump as a leader, and following him is the evil.

That evil continues.

14. True narcissists are by definition, evil

It's "just their nature" to cause harm to everyone around them.

9. He admitted early on in his term that he loved

to cause infighting among those around him. And if there wasn't any, then he would cause it. He liked to sit back and watch. He is a 100% cruel and evil non-human.

15. The article reads as if written by Birx's PR staff

I'm not saying it's necessarily untrue, and I'm not saying she wasn't a lot more competent and effective than most of the men she had to deal with, but we all saw her obsequiousness in real time.

I'm sure she cooperated with the authors and helped fashion a positive narrative about her response, which is fine, especially if people like Azar and Pence refuse to speak out about what a nightmare it was.
