Widespread ransomware attack is affecting hundreds of businesses

Source: Washington Post

A supply-chain ransomware attack that hit hours before the beginning of a holiday weekend has already affected more than 200 businesses, researchers said.

On Friday, information technology company Kaseya sent out a warning of a “potential attack” on its VSA tool, which is used by IT to manage and monitor computers remotely. Kaseya urged customers to shut down their servers running the service.

“Its critical that you do this immediately, because one of the first things the attacker does is shutoff administrative access to the VSA,” the company said.

It was unclear late Friday how disruptive the attack might be on U.S. businesses. More than 40,000 organizations use Kaseya products, the company says, which includes VSA and other IT tools.

1. Time to launch a response..

Drain every dime from every Russian oligarch's financial accounts.

Start with Putin.

2. That's assuming it's coming from Russia...

...and not China, Korea, or some other hostile actor.

Although I'd be sympathetic to your course of action regardless of where it's coming from, "just because."

3. That's a great idea, and it would totally fund President Biden's generous infrastructure plan.

4. Tied To Russia - No Surprise There

Biden challenged Putin on this very issue so the ball in now in Biden's court to respond. It does need to be proportional.

5. "Is just coincidence that criminals targeted the United States during it's independence...

celebrations. Also, the same criminals are definitely not operating from inside the great state of Russia."

6. Surely, supply chain companies were on the list of sectors...

That Biden gave to Putin as "hand-off." We need to respond quickly and hard if this is Russia.

7. Biden orders probe of latest ransomware attack

CENTRAL LAKE, Mich. (Reuters) -President Joe Biden said on Saturday he has directed U.S. intelligence agencies to investigate who was behind a sophisticated ransomware attack that hit hundreds of American businesses and led to suspicions of Russian gang involvement.

Security firm Huntress Labs said on Friday it believed the Russia-linked REvil ransomware gang was to blame for the latest ransomware outbreak. Last month, the FBI blamed the same group for paralyzing meat packer JBS SA.

Biden, on a visit to Michigan to promote his vaccination program, was asked about the hack while shopping for pies at a cherry orchard market.

Biden said "we're not certain" who is behind the attack. "The initial thinking was it was not the Russian government but we're not sure yet," he said.

Biden: 'Initial thinking' recent ransomware attack not Russian government

President Biden said Saturday that "initial thinking" is that the Russian government is not behind a ransomware attack targeting a tool provided by Miami-based IT software management company Kaseya.

Speaking to reporters in Traverse City, Mich., Biden said he's directed the "full resources of the federal government" to investigate the attack, according to a pool report.

Biden said that he's also told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the U.S. would respond if Russia is deemed responsible for these kinds of attacks.

"The initial thinking was it was not the Russian government, but we're not sure yet," Biden said.

9. I may be wrong but why would we think China did this. They don't need to do that kind of shit

to whip us...and they need to keep our businesses flowing. We are their biggest customer.
