Vaccine hesitant are in 'death lottery,' W.Va. governor says

Source: ABC News

As the country marks its 245th Independence Day, the Biden administration has officially missed its target of getting 70% of all adults at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine. And as state governments examine what went wrong with their vaccine rollout programs, a culprit is clear: the younger population is significantly less likely to be vaccinated.

"At the end of the day, the young people -- we're having a hard time getting them across the finish line and getting them vaccinated," West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice told ABC "This Week" Co-anchor Martha Raddatz.

"They're young people all across this country that are not getting vaccinated," Justice added. "It's a challenge. That's all there is to it."

Nationally, 67% of all adults have received one dose, but only 56.1% of adults in West Virginia have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine -- a surprise from a state that was lauded months ago as being one of the leaders in the U.S. on vaccine distribution.

Somewhat surprised that a Republican Governor is taking such a strong stance. Even in California, you have a large number of anti-vaxxers who fueling a recall efforts of local officials throughout the State.

2. It's more a realistic term than "culling the herd" and "herd immunity"

Death lottery says what it means, and means what it says.

3. WV is definitely a Trump state

But I have to give Governor Justice credit for his work to get people in our state vaccinated.

4. Many young people were told the vaccines will damage their heart

without thinking much about how COVID will damage their heart even more. If they're adults, then they've chosen to take their chances. If they're under 18 then their parents probably control this decision.

9. We have DUers playing along with that crap.

It's shameful. Emphasizing the few in a million chance of vaccine-related heart trouble, versus thousands of times higher probability of serious COVID consequences or death. Shameful.

5. Okay, but so are all the obese people in this country.

1500 a day die of preventable obesity related causes....but I suppose for some reason that is not a national emergency?

12. Obesity is totally under control of the person and threatens no one else.

Covid is a disease.

Like apples and oranges. Not the same.

COVID IS under the control of the person if you get vaccinated, and follow the rules.

17. True. But my point remains.

There is not as big an emphasis on obesity because it threatens no on but the obese person. And they can control the situation.

11. The Philly Inquirer had a print article today about missed 2nd shots here in the state of PA

1 million Pennsylvanians have missed their second shot. They’ll need it against the Delta variant.

by Justine McDaniel, Erin McCarthy, and Chris A. Williams
Published Jul 2, 2021

More than one million Pennsylvanians have missed their second coronavirus shots, a no-show rate among the nation’s highest and a gap that could prove critical as the country braces for the spread of the newer, more transmissible Delta variant. By June’s end, 70% of Pennsylvania adults should have been fully vaccinated. Instead, the state had reached only 60%, meaning many who got their first doses in May skipped the second shots.

With both doses likely needed to protect against the Delta variant — a single shot is only about 33% effective against Delta, one study found — getting the second shot has become more urgent than ever. Yet the share of Pennsylvanians not completing their immunizations has been rising over the last two months, reaching nearly 17% this week, according to an Inquirer analysis of CDC vaccination data. The reasons so many are skipping or delaying second shots are unclear — particularly since Pennsylvanians have done better than many in other states at showing up for their first shots.

And understanding why could prove difficult: The Pennsylvania Department of Health is not tracking missed second doses, meaning state officials don’t know who skipped the shots or what demographic groups they belong to, information that could be critical for addressing the problem. Millions are fully vaccinated, but doctors are worried about those who are skipping, particularly as U.S. leaders make it clear that more inoculations are the country’s best hope for quashing Delta’s threat to the pandemic recovery.

That has prompted new campaigns here and around the country urging people to return for their second doses. “If our immunization rates were at 85% or higher level, the individuals who missed the second dose would not be of grave concern,” said Janet Young, chief medical officer for Greater Philadelphia Health Action Inc., which serves patients at community health centers across the city. “But we aren’t even close.”

14. Transmission event of SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant reveals multiple vaccine breakthrough infections

"Transmission event occurred at events surrounding a wedding outside of Houston, TX. Two patients from India, likely transmitted the Delta variant to other guests. Participants: Following a positive SARS-CoV-2 qPCR test at a third-party site, six fully vaccinated patients were investigated. Three males and three females ranged from 53 to 69 years old. One patient suffered from diabetes while three others were classified as overweight. No significant other comorbidities were identified. None of the patients had a history of failed vaccination."

15. Car With A Locked Door and Alarm System Is Broken Into...

...This does not mean that you should just go ahead and leave the car door unlocked with the keys in the ignition. I am not sure why folks are pushing these anti-vax talking points. Plus, without a vaccine, a person remains unprotected not only against the Delta Variant, but every other variant, including the original.

18. What is your point?

Every year, millions of people get a flu jab and still get the flu. Posting crap like this just feeds into the rhetoric that because there are breakthroughs, there's no purpose in getting the COVID vaccine. And that's just not true.

24. Saying people are taking a risk with their lives on this is dignifying it.

Taking risks with one's own life is actually a psychological plus for a lot of people. It can be taken as sexy and daring. Taking risks with the lives of others is only a minor psychological minus for many others.

What will sell vaccinations with the stragglers is when not getting the vaccine becomes a headache for them or a source of shame.
