CDC says students vaccinated against the coronavirus can go maskless in fall
Source: Washington Post
he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines for schools Friday that give students who have been vaccinated the option of going maskless this fall while their classmates who have not had shots continue to wear face coverings.
The much-awaited easing of pandemic rules for kindergarten through 12th grade follows the opening of vaccine eligibility this spring to anyone 12 and older.
But it also arrives after some states and school systems have gone their own way lifting mask mandates and forging ahead with plans for a highly anticipated school year that is just weeks away.
In Texas, mask mandates were ended in public schools, under the governors order. In Miami, the familiar face gear is optional this fall. In Marietta, Ga., masks will no longer be required inside buildings or outdoors.

(44,973 posts)apparently children con go maskless in schools? I fully expect for schools to open and close in about two weeks because everybody and their mama will become infected with delta (just like happened in a couple of summer camps, where nearly every kid got infected).

(94,502 posts)The Biden transition announced Walensky's presumptive appointment as CDC director on December 7, 2020. Doctors and public health experts widely praised the choice. As the position of director of the CDC does not require Senate confirmation to take office, Walensky's tenure at the CDC began on January 20, 2021.

Perhaps armchair doctors should leave decisions to the professionals?
SergeStorms
(19,193 posts)those "professionals" should act as if they cared about the health of the country's citizens, and not bow to pressure from right-wing propagandists.
Their "suggestions" have been downright dangerous and are leading to the spread of the delta variant. As for opening schools without requiring masks, I hope they revisit that decision before those schools actually open.
You have to admit, the CDC has become a laughing stock. There doesn't seem to be any real leadership there at all.
But that's just one "armchair doctor's" opinion.

(44,973 posts)We are going to send kiddies to schools, leaving it up to local authorities on which covid precautions to follow.
Is that not going to result in delta covid spreading like wild fire?

(94,502 posts)Last year, people were happy to listen to CDC when it reinforced their own opinions (west a mask, social distance, get vaccinated). Now that science-based guidance has evolved., and their opinion disagrees with yours, it must be because theyre being pressured by right wingers.

(44,973 posts)Covid cases in US are going back up. I don't see anything suggesting that people should have stopped wearing masks, or socially distance.

(94,502 posts)The increase in recent cases is a marginal gain and doesnt begin to approach situation we were facing last year.
Since you discount CDC guidance, can I assume youve gone back into isolation except when absolutely necessary (food and medical appointments)?
Nb: my friend Laurie has been out in maskless groups with me several times, and Im fairly certain shes not being pressured by the right wing.

(19,193 posts)I agree 100% with everything you've said. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of leadership going on at the CDC.

(1,105 posts)and know that the virus is not going to mutate into a more transmissible and/or virulent variant that will be able to evade our current vaccines as it continues to infect millions around the world.
Wow, that's really quite something.

(45,427 posts)They know many kids won't be vaccinated and won't wear masks. Like businesses, schools won't know who is vaccinated or not.
It sounds like they are going for herd immunity full speed ahead and damn the torpedos on the assumption that kids won't get too sick. This may not end well for kids with suppressed immune systems. And it puts teachers and other adults at risk all over again.

(44,973 posts)Gave up masks, gave up social distancing, delta is spreading and now kiddies don't need masks at schools no more.
