CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A new wave of no parking signs and fencing is up around Charlottesville's two Confederate statues as the city readies to relocate them.

Signs could be seen around Court Square and Market Street Park early Friday, July 9, banning public parking all day Saturday.

The city announced around 12:35 p.m. that a "removal project" for the statues of Generals Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson will get underway sometime Saturday. Their stone bases will be left in place and will be removed at a later date.

According to the city, both statues will be stored in a secure location on city property until City Council makes a final decision on disposition.

A Confederate monument that helped spark a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, leaving one person dead, is expected to come down Saturday.

The violence in Charlottesville erupted in 2017 after counter-protesters clashed with white nationalists and others who were part of the "Unite the Right" rally. The groups were protesting Charlottesville's decision to remove the statue of Lee.

That afternoon, a self-identified white supremacist rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 other people. In 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 419 years.

I worked with Heather's grandfather and met her multiple times in her youth.

traitors were subsequently glorified is only something the South feels good about. Glorifying traitors. To this day. 156 years later. They need to be treated as such if they want to be armed insurrectionists.

Many many of we southerners feel sick about it and are active in opposition to the glorification of the old south.

As I’m sitting in Birmingham Alabama reading this story about the right moves from another southern city, I’m celebrating their actions. Birmingham removed statues a bit ago to the consternation of some in the state but for the most part our friends and neighbors were supportive.

The rise of Trump showed me that the south doesn’t have a lock on the white supremacy clan.

If we could get our Democratic Party here as motivated and Organized as Adams has in Georgia we have more potential to be the next Virginia than Georgia does.

DeSantis won by 15K votes against a weak candidate.

The retirements communities are the most republican part of they state. They are actually the reason we are not purple.

A good many democrats from the NE retire to South Florida, but not nearly enough to offset the Midwesterners.

Taking down these White Supremacist propaganda exercises (and you should look at what the dedication ceremonies looked like - "living" confederate battle flags made of children standing on bleachers) is a step towards healing.

With the statues gone, I think many here are finally beginning to get over this.
