U.S. "analyzing" Haiti's request to send troops

Source: Axios

The Defense Department is "analyzing" a request by Haitian authorities to send troops to assist in stabilizing the country and protect critical infrastructure following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

The latest: No decision has been made, Kirby said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. "We're analyzing it, just like we would any other request for assistance here at the Pentagon. It's going through a review."

Haitian officials have also reached out to the United Nations about sending peacekeeping forces, Reuters reports.

Elections Minister Mathias Pierre told AP Saturday the troops were needed because local police didn't have enough resources, saying: "We're asking for small troops to assist and help us. ... As long as we are weak, I think we will need our neighbors."

1. This deserves analysis...putting our military in the middle of someone else's civil war is dangerous

I feel for the people of Haiti...its a failed state in many ways and they have suffered endlessly...but I'd feel better about being part of a multi-national UN force under that governance than our troops trying to figure out who are the good vs. bad guys. I am glad VP Harris went to Central American countries to talk about the root social and economic causes of refugees seeking to enter the US and what can be done about that rather than lets just build a wall. This is a similar issue. We have to help these less fortunate countries find a way to be viable socially and economically or these issues will never end.

2. This mirrors Homeland Security's and the State Department's reasons for leaving Afghan interpreters

behind as American troops pull out. President Biden pledged, "Those who helped us are not going to be left behind.” So far that hasn't been the case. The governor of Guam says, "We're ready to accept them," but the bureaucrats are afraid that once the Afghans are on U.S. soil they'll automatically get the same rights Americans have. I bet if you dig deep enough you'll find some Trump appointees there.

The French and English removed all their interpreters months ago. Rachel has been beating this drum hard the past several weeks. '

We should have learned long ago to let other nations work out their own problems. It is more merciful in the long run than getting involved in yet another unending civil war.

Operation Uphold Democracy was a military intervention designed to remove the military regime installed by the 1991 Haitian coup d'état that overthrew the elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The operation was effectively authorized by 31 July 1994 United Nations Security Council Resolution 940.
