A 24-year-old Georgia man who contracted COVID-19 and required a double lung transplant, and who remains hospitalized, has expressed his regret he did not get vaccinated for the virus, which has so far killed more than 607,000 Americans.
Blake Bargatze had told his parents he was putting off receiving a COVID-19 vaccine because he felt uncertain about its possible side effects, WSB-TV in Atlanta reported.
He wanted to wait a few years to see, you know, if theres any side effects or anything from it, said Paul Nuclo, his stepfather. As soon as he got in the hospital, though, he said he wished he had gotten the vaccine.
Bargatze was the only member of his family who passed on getting vaccinated, Cheryl Nuclo, his mother, told Fox 5 Atlanta. Once hospitalized, however, he asked to be inoculated.
The night before he was intubated, he wanted it, Nuclo said. So it was a little bit too late then.................................................................

(102,119 posts)Survival for double lung transplant recipients (for those who survived the immediate post-operative period) ranged from 10.0 to 21.9 years (mean 15.5y; median 15.48y) in the largest and most recent study, with the most common causes of death: chronic rejection (20%), and infection (17.14%).
When a couple of doses of vaccine would in all likelihood kept him healthy for many many decades to come.
sigh...

(36,744 posts)I think a vaccinated person who needs the lungs should get them first.
and he should have to pay his own medical bills. no insurance for a self inflicted illness

(70,077 posts)People has to assume personal responsibility--but many are truly brainwashed RW media. We know that.
Im covering the #ICU this week and let me tell you, this story is not unique. The number of 20-40yo people now w/ #LungTransplants or literally fighting death trying to live long enough to have one is incredibly sad.
Its not just the old, nor sick.

(70,077 posts)I think his young age and that he had no underlying conditions qualified him.
And yes, he was foolish for not getting vaccinated.

.....Bargatze was infected with the virus in April while in Florida, his family says, and has needed a double lung transplant and months of intensive care at hospitals in three states.
The Gwinnett County native vaped regularly, but his mother says he has no underlying conditions.
No diabetes, no hypertension, she said. Just a 24-year-old kid.
Bargatze is getting treatment at a Maryland hospital after being transferred there from Atlanta for his transplant. His family says he likely picked up the virus at an indoor concert................................
