Canada's 2nd Dose Vaccinations Surpass U.S. As Americans Grapple With COVID-19 Surge
Source: MSN.Com
The percentage of Canadians who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 has for the first time surpassed the United States.
As of the afternoon of July 17, Canada had vaccinated 48.64 per cent of the population with two doses, according to COVID Tracker Canada. By comparison, 48.4 per cent of the American population were fully vaccinated, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported. This comes less than two months after Canada eclipsed its southern neighbour in terms of single-dose coverage.
The vaccination gap between the two countries started slowly narrowing as Canada began ramping up its distribution in May. The supply of doses is now on the verge of outstripping demand, according to government officials.
On Thursday, Brig.-Gen. Krista Brodie, the military general overseeing Canada's distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, said the country was moving to a more nuanced approach, with more than two million doses of vaccine already being held back because provinces have said they cant use them yet.
Meanwhile, the U.S. too has an abundance of vaccines as its vaccination rate has slowed down. Experts believe it may be because vaccine hesitancy is higher south of the border than in Canada.

(17,901 posts)but Canada has it's own pockets. During a 2017 visit to Halifax, NS, we ran into a Canadian sporting a Trump tee shirt. He thought Canada needed the same "strong" leadership. Go figure.

We're still kind of nervous about opening the border (yes, we still wear masks indoors and keep our distance from one another) so I hope the Americans who cross the border are prepared to do so as well.
This virus and all its different forms isn't done with us yet

I bet the gap is quite significant a couple of months from now.

(17,901 posts)but there was no legitimate reason for Canada's painfully slow start other than the fact that they can sometimes be the Vogon Empire when it comes to bureaucracy. Equally, there's no legitimate reason why vaccination rates are so spotty across the US other than the fact at least 1/3 of our populace lives in some religo-fascist dream state.
Opening the border is important economically to my region, northern New England / Upstate NY / Quebec / New Brunswick, and we've been waiting for them to finally catch up. While we were ramping up vaccinations in my US region this winter and spring, people in QB, NB, NS and elsewhere were screaming about why Canada wasn't or couldn't do the same. Now, we may not get the border opened due to US vaccination spottiness by state. It's maddening for a lot of folks up here. It doesn't have to be this way.

However, I've no intention of disregarding our Health Unit's advisory to continue masks, social distancing and so on despite being "fully vaccinated"

(1,336 posts)as are all my relatives and friends, except my American nephew who lives in Michigan. I never thought he was a couple of bricks short of a load until Trump was inaugurated. Now he and my Canadian nephew (same age) are at odds because Michigan nephew believes the vaxxine is an evil plot by the Democrats to control everyone. Gaghhhhhhh!

(2,635 posts)And if the current vaccination rate remains on its upward trajectory, fully vaccinated travellers from around the world could begin arriving by early September, Trudeau said during a COVID-19 status update with Canada's premiers.

I suspect Trudeau is finalizing details for vaccine passports with EU (eg ArriveCan app) but not being announced to give Biden time to minimize GQP outrage and/or actually implement a similar 'optional' EU-style vaccine passport scheme as well.
