'Hell Yeah I Would Leave': Lindsey Graham Suggests Republicans Copy Texas Democrats, Flee Washington To Block Infrastructure Vote
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday said he would take whatever legal means necessary to stop Democrats from approving their massive $3.5 trillion infrastructure package, even if it means following in the steps of Texas Democrats who fled their state to block restrictive voting legislationa likely far-fetched proposal for the U.S. Senate, where only a simple majority of lawmakers are needed to conduct business.
Speaking to Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Graham blasted Democrats' infrastructure proposal for its lofty $3.5 trillion pricetag and several provisions targeting non-physical infrastructure, saying he would "use everything lawfully in [his] toolbox to prevent rapid inflation," referencing concerns that heightened fiscal spending could drive up demand and prices.
Graham said he "would leave town" if Democrats manage to pass a reconciliation budget resolution and called on his Republican colleagues to "learn something" from Texas state Democrats who last week blocked a bill by fleeing to Washington.
The U.S. Constitution requires a quorum of 51 senators to be present for the Senate to conduct business, Graham pointed out, meaning all 50 GOP senators would need to be absent for such a tactic to work..............................

(7,512 posts)a country of "all talk no action" or as they say in Texas "all hat and no cattle".
We talk a lot but do very little. In reality we could stop almost everything and it would continue for at least a decade before people realize they were fucked.

(18,903 posts)would Manchin and Sinema leave, or stay? In Sinema's case she'd probably call in "absent".

(5,584 posts)Article I, section 5 of the Constitution requires that a quorum (51 senators) be present for the Senate to conduct business. Often, fewer than 51 senators are present on the floor, but the Senate presumes a quorum unless a roll call vote or quorum call suggests otherwise.

Me.

(50,453 posts)We offer Mitt Romney, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski something really good to stick around while the other 47 Republicans high tail it out of DC. The rules say we need a majority of senators who are present for duty to pass things, not a majority of the whole body. So with somewhere between three and five uncertain votes to 48 solid ones you realize within two weeks of the Senatorial Shit-Fit starting we can pass enough good legislation to complete detrumpification and start in on dereaganization.

(20,132 posts)Capitol police dragged him feet first into the chamber when he tried to hide to break a quorum.
The Republicans conducted a hasty strategy session in their cloakroom and then scattered. Senate Sergeant at Arms Henry Guigni, a former vice squad policeman, led a "posse of six Capitol police officers" in a post-midnight search of members' hideaway offices and Senate office building suites. As Oregon senator Robert Packwood recalled years later, "They found me through no fault of my own by going into my reception room and asking the cleaning lady if she had seen Senator Packwood. And she said, Oh, he's down in his office'." The New York Times reported that the senator thwarted their entry by wedging a heavy chair against one door. He hastily bolted another, but the police had a pass key. Pushing it open, they met minor resistance. "It was their mass against my mass," the apprehended senator noted.
At 1:17 a.m. the police and the senator approached the Chamber's entrance. By prearrangement, Senator Packwood collapsed into the arms of the officers who then transported him feet-first into the Chamber. On his feet again, he announced, "I did not come fully voluntarily."
Also, the Capitol police could go anywhere in the country. Texas police can only operate in Texas.

(31,805 posts)DC is it. The only time they have jurisdiction outside of DC is when they are part of a protection detail for a member.

I do not remember it; maybe it was before I got involved in watching politics. But damn is that funny.

(6,035 posts)I'm not so keen on him ever coming back.
The Senate would be much improved by his absence.
Maybe he could take a a few more with him, like Johnson, Portman, Cruz, McConnell, Thune, Scott, Blackburn, Cornyn, Cotton, Hawley, and Kennedy.
They wouldn't be missed one bit.

(110,913 posts)because I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work.
It's why you guys abuse the filibuster, instead. We all know how Republicans hate to do a day's work, they'd love unscheduled vacations rather than sending emails threatening a filibuster over everything Democrats do.
