McConnell says no Republicans will vote to raise debt ceiling

Source: CNN

Republicans will not vote to increase the debt ceiling, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a new interview, putting additional political pressure on Democrats in the coming weeks.

"I can't imagine there will be a single Republican voting to raise the debt ceiling after what we've been experiencing," McConnell said in an interview with Punchbowl News published Wednesday.

Democrats could include the debt ceiling increase in their budget reconciliation bill currently being debated, multiple sources tell CNN. But the more likely scenario is that Democrats could tie the debt ceiling to a must-pass funding bill at the end of September, which would force Republicans to decide if they'd want to vote to default and shut down the government at the same time. The Treasury Department has several methods available to delay the effects of the debt ceiling limit until the fall, as the fiscal year ends on September 30.

If Democrats did include the debt ceiling increase in reconciliation, lawmakers would need to choose what the new borrowing limit should be in the legislation given the special budget rules.

Nothing like using your political power to settle your petty grievances.

Just like Rand referring criminal charges against Fauci for sassing him.

These Republicans are all about power and nothing about service to the people and to the country.

I am so disappointed in our Government. You hire them to solve problems over a spectrum, and all you get is this utter crap, which they think is acceptable and desirable behavior. All we hear is about how the Repubs plan to disrupt everything until they can grab power again and subject us all to their own fascist agenda. Shame on all of them! Except for Dems, although I just don't get what's his name, and the other one.

There's also a select committee set up to investigate, among other things, whether some of their congressional members and their party's Dear Leader were directly or indirectly involved in the insurrection on 1/6. Just a guess, but I'll bet that's something else Moscow Mitch would just as soon not experience.

Reconciliation can tell the budget committees to increase the debt ceiling by a specific amount or can suspend it for a given period of time (still questioned IIRC)... but a different change (like getting rid of the ceiling entirely) would require a different bill (which could be filibustered).

Besides... that would play into their hands from a PR perspective.

including one specifically dealing with the debt.

Senate Voting Rules and Budget Reconciliation Explained (Part 1)

January 25, 2021 Kelly Whitener

(snip)

Reconciliation bills however are not an open-ended, easy way to maneuver around the Senate’s filibuster rules. The Senate can consider three basic subjects of reconciliation – spending, revenues, and the federal debt limit – in a single bill or multiple bills, but it can consider each of these in only one bill per year (unless Congress passes a second budget resolution).

https://ccf.georgetown.edu/2021/01/25/senate-voting-rules-and-budget-reconciliation-explained/

This year, the "American Rescue Plan" utilized the "spending" option as far as I'm aware. They want to pass an Infrastructure bill (which would obviously also be a "spending" one) but that won't be able to be done using that type until after the end of this FY (post-September 30). However the other 2 options should be there, assuming neither of the others were already rolled into the American Rescue Plan one.

An example of use of one of the types was back in 2017, when the tax cuts for the rich was passed using a "revenue" one for reconciliation.

The debt limit is a separate category of reconciliation (though for obvious reasons they usually go together)... but the rules limit that change to stating what the new limit is... which wouldn't include "we no longer have a limit"
