AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Republican Jake Ellzey of Texas won a U.S. House seat on Tuesday night over a rival backed by Donald Trump, dealing the former president a defeat in a test of his endorsement power since leaving office.
Ellzeys come-from-behind victory over Republican Susan Wright, the widow of the late Rep. Ron Wright, in a special congressional election runoff near Dallas is likely to be celebrated by Trump antagonists who have warned against his continued hold on the GOP. Trump backed Wright from the start and had made one last attempt to give her a boost with a telephone rally Monday night.
Ellzey was carrying more than 53% of the vote in Texas 6th Congressional District with results from almost all precincts reported.
One of things that weve seen from this campaign is a positive outlook, a Reagan Republican outlook, for the future of our country is what the people of the 6th District really really want, Ellzey said to supporters following his victory.
Congressional District 6 candidate Jake Ellzey talks with supporters during an evening fundraiser at Legal Draft in Arlington, Texas on July 14, 2021. A runoff for a U.S. House seat in Texas is deciding who will fill the remaining term of Rep. Ron Wright, who died in February after contracting COVID-19. Voters on Tuesday, July 27 were choosing between Republican Susan Wright, the widow of the late congressman, and Ellzey, a Republican state legislator. (Robert W. Hart/The Dallas Morning News via AP)

(3,695 posts)That's how they want to hype the OH11 Race between Nina Turner and Shontel Brown. Off cycle House races in deep Blue or Deep Red districts are not a good barometer of the future direction of a political party. Common sense dictates that races with 20% or less of registered voters are nothing but low turn out events.

I wonder what role Democratic and Independent voters played in that heavily Republican district with that outcome. Did they make a difference deciding between the Trumpist and an old-style R?
May that be an early sign that Dem and Indy voters are highly motivated to turn out and get rid of Trumpists wherever possible.

If Democrats were as invested in dirty tricks as the 'Pubs, there would be a dark money "conservative pro-Trump" group issuing press statements and filing lawsuits and demanding hearings on how the GOP establishment "stole" this election. A press conference next to a sex toy shop featuring some sweaty attorneys. And then a call to boycott the general because of all the "fraud."
If nothing else it would make for some great parody/performance art.
Not that I would ever endorse such an underhanded endeavor.
But I can dream, can't I?
