Lindsey Graham Has COVID-19, Says Symptoms Would Be 'Far Worse' if He Wasn't Vaccinated

Source: Newsweek

Senator Lindsey Graham has tested positive for COVID-19 and said he would likely feel much worse if he had not been vaccinated against the virus.

Breakthrough cases of COVID-19, where a vaccinated person contracts the virus, are rare and even if a person gets sick, they're far less likely to be hospitalized or die. In confirming his diagnosis, Graham expressed gratitude that he had been vaccinated because if he hadn't he believes his symptoms would be "far worse."

"I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now," Graham said in a tweet.

The senator from South Carolina said he started having flu-like symptoms on Saturday night and went to the doctor on Monday morning, where he tested positive. He described his symptoms as "mild" and likened it to how it feels when a person has a sinus infection.

If the worst happened, his replacement would be named by SC's Governor Henry McMaster, who's a real, Reichwing Nutjob. So, we'd really end up getting the shorter end of the stick, by having McMaster appoint someone even worse than Lindsey.

Though I am disappointed that it's not likely to kill him, he has to quarantine for ten days which means he'll miss a few votes. Senate doesn't have proxy voting like the House does, you're there to vote or you're not and don't vote. If he ends up with long covid, he might miss a bunch of votes.

Since the delta var. has an infection/incubation period of four days, he didn't get it at the party on Saturday, he picked it up Tuesday or Wednesday. Who was he with then?

I think that we are only half way through this pandemic, if we're lucky.

Otherwise, it's just a story with a fortuitous ending.

Call a hearing. Get Dr. Fauci to testify. Support his conclusions.

Do everything you can, Lindsey, to get your state vaccinated. Then you would be a senator worthy of keeping the title.

I couldn't use my state's dashboard to further sort by alpha vs delta or vaccination status, but since the beginning of the pandemic, 10% of people age 60-69 who became infected were hospitalized and 2% died.

Odds are that Lindsay is right when he says he would feel a lot worse if he were not vaccinated.

So I think it remains to be seen what the actual hospitalization/death rates are going to be in the unvaccinated (although just looking at what is happening in FL at the moment, might be a clue, given they have surpassed their previous record case rates).

33. After the CDC recommendation changes came out
Mon Aug 2, 2021, 06:14 PM
Aug 2021

both the WH and the U.S. House re-implemented mandates for the masking protocols - https://www.npr.org/2021/07/28/1021544722/masks-to-return-to-the-u-s-house-and-white-house-after-the-cdc-changes-guidance

The White House said President Biden and other fully vaccinated administration officials would abide by the CDC's new guidance and wear masks where appropriate.

The Senate was still at "strongly recommended" - https://www.rollcall.com/2021/07/28/mask-mandates-return-to-the-capitol-white-house/

That was as of last week.

Now with a Senator in quarantine, the contact tracing is going to have to happen and I wouldn't be surprised if they mandate in the Senate as well - I expect it being "recommended" vs what happened with the House was probably due to the fact that the House has so many more members (basically 4 times as many) than the Senate and the "technical" criteria of CDC's initial pronouncement was for recommending "indoor masking in areas of substantial or high" spread, which might not have been considered the "literal" case in the Senate at the time.
