Schools reopen with masks optional in many US classrooms

Source: Associated Press

MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) — As Tussahaw Elementary opened this week for a new school year, teary-eyed mothers led in kindergartners dwarfed by backpacks and buses dropped off fifth graders looking forward to ruling their school. The biggest clue to the lingering COVID-19 crisis was the masks worn by students and teachers — but not all of them.

Georgia, like most states, is leaving it up to local schools to decide whether to require face coverings. And 43,000-student Henry County, like many districts worn out by months of conflict over masks, has decided not to insist on them.

Instead, they are “highly recommended.”

Many parents Wednesday in this suburb south of Atlanta had mixed feelings about the policy. Some kept their children home in disagreement with it. Others sent their youngsters to class with face coverings.

1. guns, masks and selfish republicans. When will conservatives love their children?

When will conservatives love their children more than they hate liberals?

2. Schools will re-open.

It's virtually a guarantee that covid will spread. Then schools will re-close or go into quarantine and so on.

3. Schools are afraid

of losing students. Parents that don't like a district's rules can just put their kid in another district. Teachers aren't even allowed to ask the parents if they are vaccinated.

4. So much for any pretense that we as a society value the lives of our children.

Yes, we're all "worn out by months of conflict over masks..."

Imagine how worn out we'll be, most especially parents and teachers and the children themselves, by the rash of Covid related hospitalizations and funerals that are now almost certainly sure to come.

Imagine how worn out we'll be explaining to our children why it is they became so ill, or watched their friends and classmates become ill and even die, because we were too "worn out" to demand the necessary, obvious, and relatively easy measures that would have prevented their suffering.
