Greece fires spread uncontrolled, killing a fireman

Source: BBC

Two people have been killed, including a firefighter, as uncontrolled wildfires spread across Greece.

Huge clouds of smoke are billowing over the northern outskirts of the capital, Athens, where people are being urged to leave their homes.

More than 150 fires have been reported. Six areas have been put on high alert.

Greece, like many parts of Europe, has been grappling with extreme weather. The prime minister says a heatwave has turned the country into a powder keg.

Hundreds of firefighters are trying to control the fires with nearly 20 water-bombing aircraft. Extra firefighters and planes are being sent in from countries including France and the US.

One of the worst blazes has struck the island of Evia, close to Athens

The “somebody else’s climate change problem” is here for everyone now.

It’s too effin’ late. But we can still eat and breathe petroleum, can’t we?

I am the kind of person who does feel for people, and places all over - but places you have a connection to by which ever way...

I've never been there, but what makes this more present for me is that a on-line person (one of a bunch) who gives walking tours in the USA, and around the world whom I follow...

...just did a whole 3 week tour of mainland Greece, and Santorini this July. It was so wonderful, beautiful, fun, and informational. Close to being there. 💖

And ss someone who was semi-active in the '80's for renewable energy this just hurts all the more.
(a Who song lyric comes to mind...
"We tried, but you were yawning" ) Arrrrggggg!

😥 -sigh-

(I'll have to ask a particular cousin if we still have relatives there)
