Bobby Bowden, the folksy Hall of Fame coach who won 377 games and built Florida State into one of college footballs great dynasties with two national championships, has died. He was 91.
Bobbys son, Terry, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home surrounded by family early Sunday morning. Florida State also announced the news on social media.
It was truly peaceful, Terry Bowden said in a text message to AP.
Bobby Bowden announced on July 21 he had a terminal illness that Terry Bowden later said was pancreatic cancer. Bobby Bowden had been treated for prostate cancer more than a decade ago.

(12,132 posts)My parents met at FSU and my grandpa was getting his masters degree there at the same time.
Loved him when he was coach but was pretty disappointed to find out he was a tRumper.
Oh well, football season starts soon and I'll be cheering them on like always.

(182,769 posts)The way he was depicted in We are Marshall is absolutely correct. He was the coach at WVU and he made everything the needed to recover available. Good man.

Lots of famous funny things he said but that one always stick with me. Yeah Iverson was that good at football too.

(17,530 posts)He had a couple of bad seasons near the end of his reign and he suddenly became a "loser" to the Seminole Boosters. He wanted one more season before retiring but the boosters wanted wins and gave Bowden the Bum's rush. It was a shameful process. The man put FSU football (and FSU) on the map, he deserved more, and since he has gone, so has the team's winning ways.
Even though his rotten politics were consistent with many other millionaires, I believe that Bowden was one of the "good guys" in the world. Rest in peace.

(2,065 posts)The end for Bobby at FSU was complicated. Your opinion is valid and held by some. For others it was like taking the keys from your elderly parents. He hurt his cause by naming his son the offensive coordinator and that was a disaster so given the age, the appearance that he had lost a step, his sons own failures and it was tough.
We will always love Bobby. He changed the city, university, and a lot of peoples lives.
