Immigration Lawyers Say Trump-Appointed Judge in Texas Just Decided He's in Control of ICE and 'Empe

Source: Law & Crime

‘Emperor of U.S. Immigration Policy’ in ‘Unprecedented and Outrageous’ Ruling

Lawyers say a federal judge in Texas gave himself almost total control over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a shocking Thursday ruling that stopped the Biden administration from enforcing its previously outlined priorities for the controversial deportation agency.

Donald Trump in 2020, authored the order enjoining two immigration memos issued on Jan. 20 and Feb. 18 by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE directors, respectively.

Collectively, those two memos generally established a return to the enforcement priorities of the Obama administration–instructing government agents to arrest and detain immigrants considered public safety and/or national security threats. Specifically, ICE agents were directed to focus on three tiers of deportation priorities: (1) undocumented immigrants who are deemed to be or who are suspected of being a national security threat; (2) undocumented immigrants who entered or attempted to enter the country “on or after November 1, 2020;” and (3) undocumented immigrants convicted of certain felony and gang-related offenses.

With the issuance of his sprawling, 160-page opinion and order, however, Tipton wiped away all of ICE’s enforcement priorities.

Even the Supreme Court would overrule that. How high up in the chain of courts is this, is the Appeals Court next up?

Cisneros is the young immigration rights attorney who will be running against Rep. Henry Cuellar for a second time in 2022. If she wants to prove her bona fides, then she should be involved in the dispute.

Let his 160 page ruling be an exercise in futility. There is nothing more frustrating to put so much effort into your work product than to have it dismissed and thrown in the trash can.

but now with a SCOTUS who's majority has given its support to things like new Jim Crow laws I no longer trust them to protect us.
