ANNAPOLIS Md. (WJZ) Maryland reported 1,206 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths, according to state health department data released Friday morning.
Doctors say the new cases are fueled by dangerous strains targeting the unvaccinated. During an August press conference, Gov. Larry Hogan said the Delta variant, a strain that is reportedly two to four times more contagious than the original virus strain, accounts for nearly every new confirmed case in Maryland.
Hogan also said less than 0.01% of vaccinated Marylanders have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and less than 0.001% of vaccinated Marylanders have died from the virus.
More than 3.6 million Maryland adults are fully vaccinated. State officials also reported that the state positivity rose to 5.06%.
Hospitalizations increased by 13 to 656. Of those hospitalized, 488 remain in acute care and 155 remain in the ICU as of Friday.

LINTHICUM (WJZ) Doctors in Maryland are seeing more young patients with COVID-19.
New infections among people age 0 to 29 have increased more than 700 percent in the past month in Maryland, according to an analysis of Maryland Department of Health statistics.
Dr. Kinjal Sheth, chief of care at Northwest Hospital, said with most schools set to open soon there are fears cases could rise even more.
I do have two young children and they will be wearing masks all day in school, and thats what the policy should be at every school, Sheth said.
There were just 12 new cases among children up to 9 years old on July 20. There were 224 reported on August 20.
If you had COVID in the past, you can get it again. It can be worse, and do you know whats also horrible? To be 25 years old and to be short of breath for the rest of your life for no reason, he said, urging people to get vaccinated. .....................................................

(9,998 posts)They're 34th in terms of Per Capita Deaths.
Their per capita new case rate is nowhere near as out of control as many other states.
I'd rather be MD than the state I'm in, California, which is appearing to experience a spike in cases and deaths.

(130,768 posts)as I can stay pretty isolated, but my grandson is returning to school August 31, 2d grade. I expect he'll return to home-schooling/virtual if his school's numbers require such.
My son in law is a deputy sheriff; not on the street often, but I'm concerned about # of social encounters he's forced into.

(42,862 posts)For a brief period last month, more folks were venturing out without their masks. But I rarely see anyone (indoors) without a mask.
