FINLAND, Minn. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service on Saturday closed the popular Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota as the largest active wildfire in the state threatens the 1-million-acre property.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness stopped issuing entry permits Saturday, closing all land, water, trails, portages, campsites, canoe routes and wilderness entry points until Aug. 27.

The Boundary Waters in the Superior National Forest is one of the most visited federally designated wilderness areas.

My son-in-law and his brother and dad are headed in that direction next week.

I’m so sorry for the suffering of our earth and everyone on it.

That area is just amazing, I can still remember going back into the lakes, by foot, which are many and going out into the middle of the lakes and looking down and seeing the bottom, which was about 20 feet or more in some cases...and then at night time looking at the stars or the Northern Lights it was and is amazing to watch that dance in the atmosphere ....and now this vital watershed is under attack by fire....this just breaks my heart....

Back in the mid 60s as a 14 year old boy scout we went on a canoe trip. I loved the area.
