No containment, new threats from Northern California fire

Source: AP

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire burning for a week in Northern California continued to grow out of control, one of about a dozen big blazes in the drought-stricken state that have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate.

There was zero containment Sunday of the Caldor Fire, which had charred nearly 154 square miles (399 square kilometers) of trees and brush in the northern Sierra Nevada after breaking out Aug. 14. The cause was under investigation.

Firefighters hoped to take advantage of calmer weather and cooler temperatures a day after gusts pushed the fire across U.S. Route 50, threatening more remote communities in El Dorado County.

Erratic winds sent embers flying into tinder-dry fuel beds, starting new ignition points and challenging crews trying to chase down the flames in rugged terrain.

And I just found out about the Monument fire: 147,000 acres in northern California! Nobody on tv has mentioned it.

It won't stop until winter. And even then, embers in the peat moss soil will smolder until spring and start again if it's a dry year. They're called zombie fires. Some have been doing this for years now.

Know the area intimately. After the loggers came through the forests were neglected. This is the end result.

The rest of the country has accepted this as the West's new norm, and rethuglicans are delighted.

Flooding on the east coast is primary news now. I haven't heard any experts talking about these events together representing climate change.

The Tennessee flooding doesn't seem to get much air time either.

The west is on fire, out east is flooded, water supply is too low, the south is out of hospital beds....on and on.

I have family who had to evacuate in CA. My son is quarantined for covid contact. It's maddening the way the media chooses the news they report.
