Al Capone's former South Florida home slated for demolition

Source: AP

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The South Florida house that gangster Al Capone owned for nearly two decades, and died in, is facing demolition plans.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the new owners of the nine-bedroom, Miami Beach house plan to demolish it after buying it for $10.75 million this summer.

One of the owners, developer Todd Glaser, told the Herald the home, which is about 3 feet (1 meter) below sea level, has flood damage and standing water underneath it. The new owners plan to build a two-story modern spec home with 8 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a Jacuzzi, spa and sauna.

“The house is a piece of crap,” Glaser said. “It’s a disgrace to Miami Beach.”

By marriage, we have a Capone (yes that Capone) in our family tree.

15. I saw on another thread that Florida's soil is too porous for levies to be effective.

Water will just seep onto the other side, you see. It's different in New Orleans.

23. It's truly unfortunate Trump is in Mar-a-Lago.

It's an historic house and I wish it would pass into worthier hands.

9. Well, there's a thought

Maybe the owners could get Fox to pay them to demolish it for a Geraldo special.

14. Beautiful, but if it's always flooding what can you do?

Looks like the home is going to be designated as historical..

New owner says they will still demolish it...What??
It is a beautiful home...

18. That whole area is fill, man made

Just like most of those islands. Created by dredging the bottom of the bay. For the price of that land, no one bat's an eye at having to add more dredged fill and the new house can be built any elevation it needs to be. New construction is being built 10-15 ft above these original home

11. Jimmy Hoffa found buried in Al Capone's backyard

There's an idea for a screenplay.

With Jack Nicholson back, as Jimmy's body this time, and Ivanka and slumlord Jared as the unsuspecting buyers.

21. Capone's Demise

Due to his failing health, Capone was released from prison on November 16, 1939, and referred to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for the treatment of paresis (caused by late-stage syphilis). Hopkins refused to admit him on his reputation alone, but Union Memorial Hospital accepted him. Capone was grateful for the compassionate care that he received and donated two Japanese weeping cherry trees to Union Memorial Hospital in 1939. A very sickly Capone left Baltimore on March 20, 1940, after a few weeks of inpatient and outpatient care, for Palm Island, Florida. In 1942, after mass production of penicillin was started in the United States, Capone was one of the first American patients treated by the new drug. Though it was too late for him to reverse the damage to his brain, it did slow down the progression of the disease.

In 1946, his physician and a Baltimore psychiatrist examined him and concluded that Capone had the mentality of a 12-year-old child. He spent the last years of his life at his mansion in Palm Island, Florida, spending time with his wife and grandchildren. On January 21, 1947, Capone had a stroke. He regained consciousness and started to improve, but contracted bronchopneumonia. He suffered a cardiac arrest on January 22, and on January 25, surrounded by his family in his home, Capone died after his heart failed as a result of apoplexy. His body was transported back to Chicago a week later and a private funeral was held. He was originally buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Chicago. In 1950, Capone's remains, along with those of his father, Gabriele, and brother, Salvatore, were moved to Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois

I can picture TFG in the role of Capone in this narrative.

24. It's obviously not 3 feet below sea level

The house is on the water and you can see the sea level in the pic with the pool.
If it was 3 feet below sea level there would be water 3 feet up the side of the house every high tide.
