WASHINGTON (AP) The first Womens March of the Biden administration heads straight for the steps of the Supreme Court on Saturday, part of nationwide protests demanding continued access to abortion in a year when conservative lawmakers and judges have put it in jeopardy.
Thousands of women filled a square near the White House for a rally before the march. Many waved signs that said Mind your own uterus, I love someone who had an abortion and Abortion is a personal choice, not a legal debate, among other messages.
Some wore T-shirts reading simply 1973, a reference to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which made abortion legal for generations of American women.
Elaine Baijal, a 19-year-old student at American University, took cellphone photos with her friends and their signs as the event started. She said her mother told her of coming to a march for legal abortion with her own mother in the 1970s.

(9,006 posts)I'm afraid it might take some more-extreme measures to get the legislators attention. Like, withholding sex, for instance, until these neanderthal men wake the fuck up.
Maybe the women should march with firearms...?

(29 posts)I just attended a local women's march in New Hampshire. There were approximately 140 women there and unfortunately most like myself were over the age of 60. Even though there is a small liberal arts college in town, there were few if any younger women represented. We were also being stalked by a white man also in his 60's, wearing camouflage gear, obviously packing a gun. He was menacingly circling the gathering asking each of us if we knew the "real" history of Roe v Wade.
This is also the new reality of expressing ourselves at public gatherings. The real and dangerous possibility of a shooting tragedy. We watched him as he tore off in an old pick up truck plastered with Trump/Pence stickers. This ruined the day for my 40 year old daughter and myself.

(9,006 posts)Trump has allowed jerks that were in the closet to come out and be public.
It sucks that we have to think that way, being hyper-alert in public, but these people are dangerous.

(51,584 posts)It was larger than the Women's March group had predicted and much more than the local and MSMedia predicted. This was a very quick response to the TX and SCOTUS decisions. The media hardly acknowledged this march even though over 600 events were scheduled. Today they are singing a different tune since the people turned out, much to the MSMedia's dismay.
Wake up MSM! Women are pissed off and we are the majority!!!!!!! 51% of the US population. No wonder the GQP wants to keep us barefoot and pregnant. Control and $$$ is the GQP now and the foreseeable future.

(51,584 posts)actually it is a two sided sign, and it said, "No More Wire Hangers" (like the Joan Crawford joke from Mommy Dearest) and several people came over to me and told me about real stories of family members who really had wire hanger abortions...horror stories that men don't want to hear or even acknowledge.

Just in case Texas legislature thought this would all be taken in stride.

(15,080 posts)Marchers are on the steps of SCOTUS but none of the justices are even in the building today.
Plus, six of them don't care what the marchers are saying. They are seated for life and they can do whatever the hell they want with zero repercussions.

(107,881 posts)Thousands of protesters marched at rallies in Washington and cities across the country Saturday, decrying Texass recent ban on most abortions and warning that the U.S. Supreme Courts conservative majority could impose further restrictions in the coming months.
Amassing in downtown D.C. before walking in a clamorous procession to the Supreme Court, a roster of speakers bemoaned a looming threat to Roe v. Wade and implored Americans to enlist in a nationwide campaign to preserve abortion rights.
No matter where you live, no matter where you are, this moment is dark it is dark but thats why were here, Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood, told the crowd at the Rally for Abortion Justice.
It is our job to imagine the light, even when we cant see it, Johnson said. It is our job to turn pain into purpose. It is our job to turn pain into power.

(113,232 posts)rallies, and there were rallies at over 600 locales. But "thousands" across the country is the best that you could do? You underreport on women's events, as we have seen time and again, and you slobber all over the magats, reporting huge numbers that we can see for ourselves are highly inflated.
Your sexism is showing, wapo, and it is far past time that you at least pretended to integrity.

The Democrats really need to codify Roe v. Wade, before the 2022 elections.
