New York's largest health care provider fires 1,400 unvaccinated employees.Last edited Tue Oct 5, 2021, 01:04 AM - Edit history (1)
Source: New York Times
Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider, announced on Monday that 1,400 employees — less than 2 percent of its staff — refused to get vaccinated against the coronavirus and had to leave their jobs. New York is requiring that the state’s more than 650,000 hospital and nursing home workers be vaccinated, a mandate that started to take effect last week, prompting tens of thousands of employees to get their shots. Others filed lawsuits, and courtrooms across the state are determining when and how to allow exemptions to the requirement. Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/04/nyregion/northwell-employees-fired.html Overall this is _extremely_ encouraging because that'd put the number of holdouts at less than two percent. After Newsom's win I think the verdict is clear: mandatory vaccines are a winning policy!

2. It is really disturbing to me
that so many people in the health care industry in New York would choose being fired over getting a vaccine that has been shown to be extremely safe. I wonder how many other got it against their wishes, solely to keep their job.

4. well that's just the thing, it was an _extremely_ small number
Keep in mind that 1400 is out of 76000. It is an _extremely_ low number.
As far as the people that felt "threatened" into getting it ( ![]() |

5. That doesn't seem extremely small to me.
Before this all started, I have would guessed that would the number of people who would take some persuading. When vaccination was made a condition for employment, I would have guessed only a handful of crazies would have held out, not 1400.

They have no business in health care if they are unvaccinated!

10. They may have a grace period.
Some healthcare companies are giving a one week grace period, and if they get vaccinated within that time they're not fired. Some people will always push the envelope to see if management is serious with their threats.
I don't know for sure if that's the case here, but if it is, the total will probably drop considerably. For the people who won't get vaccinated, buh bye, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. |

Some employers have been giving the option of going on leave to complete the process.

20. I'm aware of the process.
Some employers are allowing their employees to initiate the process by having the first shot by the cut off date. They needn't complete the dual vaccination process by the cut off date to retain employment.

12. 1400
Out of 650,000. That’s great.
Even though we see on the news and internet mostly the anti vaxxers / maskers etc. we are not the minority they are. We do not have to coddle these people. The reason we are still in a pandemic and why my employer pushed out bringing back people on site till January is because of these people. They need to be fire and ostracized for the idiocy of listening to quacks like Scott Atlas and Fox News over reputable sources. This is very good news. Goodbye and good riddance to the 1400. |

As you said, the people have spoken and it's time to get a bit more aggressive. The vast majority are pro mandate.

22. Those of us who got vaccinated are tired of the holdouts.
They deserve to lose their jobs if they’re too lazy to learn the truth. All it takes is a few minutes with Google to find information to dispel the myths about how the vaccine may be dangerous. I have no sympathy for people who would rather believe Fox News or some obscure wacko conspiracy site than the fact that millions of people have safety taken the vaccine.
I recently learned from a MAGAT that one of the reasons the MAGATs aren’t concerned about the number of Covid deaths is that they’re being told that the 700,000 US deaths are actually the total around the world and the US media is just lying about the number! I never would have thought that we have so many utterly ignorant people in this country. |

31. There are plenty of jobs available in healthcare
for anyone looking for long term career opportunities. Years ago there were a bunch of new nursing grads unable to find their first job. I doubt that is a problem these days.
