Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and other top aides subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack are expected to defy orders for documents and testimony related to 6 January, according to a source familiar with the matter.

All four Trump aides targeted by the select committee Meadows, deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, strategist Steve Bannon and defense department aide Kash Patel are expected to resist the orders because Trump is preparing to direct them to do so, the source said.

I think all of these people should be held in contempt and spend some time thinking about this in jail.

(6,228 posts)Then what happens? Can they be held in contempt? We need for folks to see the committee isn't playing around.

(2,146 posts)the Sgt at arms can go find them and physically haul them before the committee. If they then refuse to cooperate, they can be thrown into the capitol jail until they do. I am sure that Pelosi and the committee has plans for those who refuse to obey the law. I think immediate referral to the DOJ has been mentioned, The GOP hopes to stall, delay, and run out the clock. But, because this is the way they always act when they know they are in trouble, I am sure provisions have been made to counter the stalls and delays.
It looks to me like picking them up, and tossing them in jail, THEN let them stay there while they try their games, is the most effective way of dealing with these crooks and traitors.
OTOH, if the DOJ is handed the job, I think the DOJ can swoop in and grab them, plus computers, phones, paperwork, emails, etc. And still hand the traitor over to the committee to put in the congressional jail. My guess is the traitors think they can hide. If the DOJ is handed the job, then they can track them down via electronic records, phone location, etc., while the committee can't do that.

If the Dems wimp out (again) and do another

then these bastards will just keep on wiping their dirty shoes on our Constitution and everything else that holds America together.
And the very issuance of a subpoena wont mean squat.

(23,091 posts)What will they do to the criminal resisters - this will show their resolve. Just referring them for criminal investigation is insufficient. I agree that they should be held in contempt of court and locked up for refusing to show. Dems have traditionally not played hardball and they will lose if that is the case now and we could totally lose our country as a result. Come on and take it to these traitors!

(21,304 posts)soon it will be Kornacki time, 9 months since an attempted coup on our government. We did have televised hearings within weeks of the evacuation of Afghanistan where some of the coup supporters got to bash president Biden and general Milley.

(43,128 posts)This should not be negotiated. They should not settle for partial compliance. Time to send people to the slammer and keep them there. American voters trusted these elected Reps by electing them. The people are the source of power, not these privileged Republican stuff-shirts.

(4,845 posts)Unless and until real consequences come, they will not change their way since they ignore subpoenas in Trump era. We also have to fight the BS "executive privileges" part too since Trump will definitely throw that out there. Until democrats can put some of these people in jail, they will not willingly comply especially you know they did the wrong and will have real consequences if they speak the truth.

(7,430 posts)to refuse, is an attempt to express his SUPERIORITY over Congress, even as a civilian.
If Congress blinks, the struggle is over and the fascists win. Congress must go balls to the wall on this one. This is an existential crisis. It's either the Constitution or it's Trump.
Watch what happens when the subpoenas are ignored. Listen to the GOPers. That will tell you who is loyal to the Constitution and who isn't. The GOP will be silent when the subpoenas are ignored, or they'll "question" whether Congress has the authority to issue subpoenas or if Congress has the authority to issue inherent contempt citations.
Bennie Thompson and the Dems dove into this existential struggle, and they should have. The GOP is clearly the party that WANTS A DICTATOR. They are disloyal to their oaths and are traitors. I'm not using hyperbole. The GOP is the party bent on destroying the government.
Eyeball_Kid
(7,430 posts)You already warned that you would issue criminal referrals to the DOJ if/when subpoenas are ignored.
When those subpoenas are ignored, do TWO THINGS, NOT ONE.
1. Round up those who are ignoring subpoenas and toss them in jail under your authority to issue inherent contempt citations. Keep them there until they are willing to testify.
2. Afterward, and only afterward, make the criminal referrals.
There is no double jeopardy. Inherent contempt actions come from the Legislative Branch. A criminal referral goes to the Executive Branch.
