KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) An explosion went off Friday among Shiite Muslim worshippers at a mosque in northern Afghanistan, killing or wounding at least 100 people, a Taliban police official said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which took place in Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province, but militants from the Islamic State group have a long history of attacking Afghanistans Shiite Muslim minority.
Dost Mohammad Obaida, the deputy police chief for Kunduz province, said that the majority of them have been killed. He said the attack may have been carried out by a suicide bomber who mingled among the worshipers.
I assure our Shiite brothers that the Taliban are prepared to ensure their safety, Obaida said, adding that an investigation was underway.

(33,244 posts)100 dead at their mosque is not an auspicious start.
Certainly interesting to hear Sunni Terrorists call Shiites "brothers", however. Their press releases are getting better.

Nevertheless, this is not our fight. It is up to the Afghans to decide whether they are willing to tolerate rule by the Taliban. There are plenty of weapons in Afghanistan to start a revolt and I am sure the CIA would provide more.

(1,568 posts)of territory and it becomes another Iraq/Syria situation in which they attract large numbers of foreign fighters to spread their new caliphate? Does the US and allies go back in there? Work with the Taliban? That seems unlikely to go over well there or here. Leave it to the regional powers Iran, Pakistan, and China?
Should be interesting to see how things play out over the next year or so.
