'Let's go, Brandon' conservative slur rejected by NASCAR, legal action threatened

Source: Sarasota Herald-Tribune

AVONDALE, Ariz. — NASCAR denounced its association with the “Let's go, Brandon” political cry being used across the country as an insult directed at President Joe Biden. Steve Phelps, NASCAR's president, said Friday the top motorsports series in the United States does not want to be associated with politics “on the left or the right.”

Phelps also said NASCAR will pursue action against any illegal use of its trademarks on merchandise boasting the slogan. Retired baseball star Lenny Dykstra posted a photo on Twitter this week of a man eating breakfast at a New Jersey hotel wearing a black “Let's go, Brandon” shirt alongside NASCAR's trademarked color bars.

“We will pursue whoever (is using logos) and get that stuff,” Phelps said. “That's not OK. It's not OK that you're using our trademarks illegally, regardless of whether we agree with what the position is.”

Brandon Brown won his first career NASCAR race in October in Alabama, and the Talladega Superspeedway crowd at the Xfinity Series race chanted “F--- Joe Biden" during Brown's interview. It was not clear if NBC Sports reporter Kelli Stavast, who was wearing a headset, could hear what the crowd was saying during the interview, and she incorrectly told Brown the fans were cheering “Let's go, Brandon.”

7. Gonna be some pocketbooks hurt, too.

We will pursue whoever (is using logos) and get that stuff,”

I know a guy who, at one time, was a vice president and associate general counsel of a MAJOR football university. His job on game days was to walk around the area near the stadium and confiscate merchandise from vendors that wasn’t licensed by the school. He did it at away games with their biggest rival, too.

And that doesn’t even take into account lawsuits for injunctions and damages.

3. Wow, might have to re-think my opinion of NASCAR.

Disclaimer: I go the the Las Vegas race every year (missed last year because of Covid) since they started in 1998 (missed 2000 & 2001 for business reasons).

I hate roundy-round racing, (I raced sports cars for 22 years on road courses), but we have a tailgate party with 18-24 of us each year that goes on for a week, and they threw in a roundy-round race in for free. (LOL, the tickets and pass for the Checkered Flag lot costs us almost $700).

We're there for our friends and our party. Las Vegas is "the most expensive" venue NASCAR has.

Too many fuck'n rednecks, (NASCAR finally banned the confederate flag [note the small "c"] but they're still there, and always will be.

I don't watch NASCAR on TV, I've never been to another venue, and NEVER will. But, that said, kudos to NASCAR for standing up to the haters.

13. I know you said you'd never go to another venue...

...but I tell ya, you really need to visit Sonoma. It's a road course so no roundy-round racing. It's just north of San Francisco so quite a few liberals go to the show. (At NASCAR races I am low-level royalty because I've attended a race at Rockingham, which is no longer on the circuit. Apparently if someone attended a race at a retired track it raises everyone's opinion of you. Anyway, at Sonoma I got into a discussion of who should win this week's race; I said I was a Harvick fan - Kevin Harvick was running like shit at that point in the season - but since I need to pick a second driver since he ain't gonna win, I'll go with Daniel Suarez. Not one person complained about me liking the Mexican guy; everyone there thought he was a decent field driver who really deserved a win, and why not here? Unfortunately, Suarez finished 17th and Martin Truex Jr., who is also a decent person, won.) It's got good concessions - expensive as hell, but that's kind of to be expected. The facility is excellent. The track is far enough from the grandstands you don't need hearing protection like you do at an oval. And they don't seem to care if the spectators smoke weed, so long as they don't do it at their seats. The only real problem is there aren't any water bottle filling stations, or at least weren't in 2019 when I attended. The best seats IMO are the Turn 7 Terrace and Turn 9 Terrace, because if you took the Rally bus to the track the bus parks not all that far from those two seating areas and it's easy to get back there. Not too fond of the grandstand because you can't see the east end of the track - and most of the track is east of the grandstand. If you don't mind a hell of a walk, the Earnhardt Terrace in Turn 2 is also really good seating.

18. Love your post...I raced at Sonoma, when it was known as Sears Point...

incredible track.

Sonoma and Watkins Glen are two of the races I will actually watch.

Please don't get me wrong. Many of the NASCAR drivers are incredible road race drivers. It has happened in the last 5-7 years, but they are some of the best drivers in the world.

The thing that drives me crazy is the thought of a GPS saying, "In 400 yards turn left, in 600 yards, turn left, in 400 yards, turn left, in 600 yards turn left" for 200+ laps.

Road courses are so much more exciting, but I understand they are much more difficult to show on TV.

Love the road courses.

PS: some of the best wines in the world in Sonoma & Napa...been to dozens of them.

19. Road courses are the best. That's why I follow F1

They don't race on many actual roads anymore, but they do have Baku, Singapore, Monaco, and maybe a few others I'm forgetting because it's late.

NASCAR is dead boring to me. I don't get it.

I'm also one of those weirdos who watches all 24hrs of Le Mans

17. Sadly, it's what was expected of Lenny Dykstra

His game winning two-run homer against the Astros in Game 3 of the 1986 NLCS is a wonderful childhood memory. But he's a total fuck-up from go.

5. There are lots of the let's go brandon shirts for sale on ebay.

Some shirts have sold by the hundreds. Some have the Nascar colored bars also. Lots of F.J.B. shirts, too. If anyone has an ebay account, it doesn't hurt to report the shirts as being offensive. Each page has a link where anyone can report an item.

22. "Typical of that slowly dying website to do so."

Numbers say otherwise:

In the second quarter of 2021, eBay's gross merchandise volume amounted to approximately 22.1 billion dollars. Strongly driven by the increase in online sales due to the coronavirus pandemic, the online marketplace achieved its highest GMV ever between April and June 2020, when it reached 27.14 billion U.S. dollars

That hurts.

Yes yes I realize that NASCAR is just a corporate advertising entity at this point.

21. LOL, NASCAR loves any publicity

It’s one step above wrestling as far as manufacturing drama. I wouldn’t really call that denouncing, they are just worried about trademark infringement and someone making a buck off their logo.

31. Believe it or not,

a lot of pro-wrestling fans appear to be fairly liberal. I used to watch wrestling twenty years ago and now occasionally visit a wrestling sub-Reddit for nostalgia reasons. You’d be surprised at the attitudes there towards social justice and other issues. It pleasantly surprised me.
