Nov 17 (Reuters) - A Mississippi man who shot his estranged wife to death and sexually assaulted his stepdaughter during an eight-hour 2010 standoff with police was put to death on Wednesday, local media reported.
David Cox, who in 2018 dismissed his attorneys and dropped his appeals in the case, saying he deserved the death penalty, was the first prisoner executed in Mississippi in nine years.
He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. central time (0012 GMT Thursday) at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, the Clarion-Ledger newspaper reported.
The condemned man, in his final words said: "I want to tell my children that I love them very, very much and that I was a good man at one time," Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain told the paper.

(1,159 posts)I am against the death penalty. (Full stop)
I would have sentenced him to solitary confinement in a small cell for life, never to hear music or another human voice, and never to again see the sun, a cloud, tree, book, bird, picture or another human for the rest of his natural life. Cruel and unusual? Of course, but so be it.

(2,022 posts)I was actually impressed at how he owned up to his deeds. And I'm don't doubt that he once was a good man.

(62,269 posts)He took the easy way out. Fully believing he was going to heaven, etc.
He may have been a good person at one point, but he repeatedly raped his daughter for years, and when she finally told on him, after he got out of jail over the rapes, he raped her one last time while her mother slowly bled to death and was forced to watch. Total psychopath of a human.
On top of that he apparently killed his wifes friend a few years prior and before his execution sent out a letter admitting to it. Those details have not surfaced yet though.

(2,022 posts)What difference does it make? He has been removed from our society, we don't have to think about what he is doing or what will become of him, and that is what is important in my view. I can appreciate that his daughter had a different view.
