Taiwan sends jets after 27 Chinese planes enter buffer zone

Source: AP

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan said 27 Chinese aircraft entered its air defense buffer zone on Sunday, the latest in a long series of incursions as part of Beijing’s pressure on the self-ruled island.

The Defense Ministry said Taiwan scrambled combat aircraft to “warn” the Chinese planes to leave. It also deployed missile systems to monitor them.

Sunday’s incursion included 18 fighter jets and five H-6 bombers, as well as a Y-20 aerial refueling aircraft, according to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry.

The Chinese aircraft flew into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone near the southern part of the island and out into the Pacific Ocean before returning to China, according to a map by Taiwan authorities.

there is no such thing as a "buffer zone" either. The use of the word "incursion" is just misleading and inflammatory. What, the Chinese PLAAF can't fly off their own coast? Much of the Taiwan ADIZ lies over the Chinese mainland. The whole thing is a bogus issue.

There is a 12 mile territorial limit and that's it. Everything outside of it is international airspace.

9. We'd have a years notice if China was going to invade Taiwan.

They’d have to assemble the troops and ships to transport them, which would probably involve seizing civilian ships.

And we’re never going to go to war over Ukraine. Not now, not under Trump, not under anyone. Ukraine should've never given up their nuclear weapons.

Of course, the rest of the world said that Ukraine would be protected from Russia if they'd give up their nukes. And we all should help them short of supplying troops. Make another invasion costly.

the whole thing is suspicious. We also seem to be building up defensive capabilities of various countries. Maybe it's normal, or something we would do anyway. But, it's notable.
