Iran calls for Trump, Pompeo to face trial for Soleimani assassination
Source: The Hill
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is calling for former and former Secretary of State to face trial for the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a January 2020 drone strike ordered by Trump.
Raisi, in a speech on Monday, said Trump and Pompeo should be "Tried in a fair court" for the assassination of Soleimani.
"If Trump and Pompeo are not tried in a fair court for the criminal act of assassinating General Soleimani, Muslims will take our martyr's revenge," Raisi said, according to Reuters.
The Hill reached out to Trump and Pompeo for comment.

(2,868 posts)it was illegal. A high-ranking government official on a diplomatic mission to another country assassinated on their soil.
Illegal is Donnie's Modus Operandi.

(12,523 posts)He was directly responsible for the deaths of many US & Allied forces. As a military official, he was fair game as a target.
1) That was merely a political designation. Other nations could make the same designation against Donnie, Pompeo, and others.
2) The sovereign nation of Iraq requested his aide in defending against an invasion and occupation which was illegal under international law, as was even stated by Kofi Annan, who was Secretary-General of the United Nations at the time. What do YOU call it when someone helps an allied nation to defend their homeland against forces illegally invading their country?
3) He was far more than a "military official", he was a high-ranking government official, and on an official diplomatic mission. It would be like another country assassinating the U.S. Secretary of Defense while they were on an official diplomatic mission to one of our allied countries.
No cigar.

(33,284 posts)Investigations of possible crimes before the ICC are begun by the Office of the
Prosecutor, under the following circumstances:
At the request of a member state (so far, 122 countries have signed the Rome
Statute to become ICC members) on whose territory crimes have taken place;
At the behest of the UN Security Council (even if the state is not an ICC
member); and
On the initiative of the ICC prosecutors office, in response to complaints filed
by individuals.
After reviewing a complaint, the prosecutors office may begin a preliminary
investigation of the facts. This may lead to a full investigation, which may in turn lead
to an arrest and charges, with the suspect being detained at The Hague to await trial.
Before opening a trial, a panel of judges reviews the case, in a confirmation of charges
hearing.
