Eric Adams Cuts His Brother's Duties After Giving Him Top Police Job

Source: NYT

When Mayor Eric Adams named a Virginia parking administrator and retired police sergeant to a top position in the New York Police Department, he said the man had one qualification that no one else there possessed: He was the mayor’s brother.

Bernard Adams, 56, a former police sergeant who retired from the force in 2006 after 20 years, has been given one of the most sensitive, elite jobs in city government: overseeing the unit that will protect the mayor’s physical safety.

As a community affairs sergeant, Mr. Adams helped support the security effort at various big events, including the U.S. Open, city officials said. His most recent job was at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where he worked in parking administration.

The mayor, who said on Sunday that white supremacy and “anarchists” are on the rise, suggested that he can trust no one in the Police Department as much as he can his own kin.

I don’t live there, but didn’t like the way they did the voting this time. I know other places use it, but hope it never comes to my state or city.

...less than 12 days, and he's being bashed almost constantly.

Anyone here want a republican mayor in New York City?

and seems to be more self-righteous than many people find wise in a public official, never mind the Mayor of NYC. I hope he has some worthy qualities but so far he sounds far more like Chris Christie than I feel is good for the City or for Democrats.

I don't understand why Adams is being held to a higher standard than other Democrats or even some republicans (Bloomberg had a longer "honeymoon" when he was first elected mayor as a republican.)

Realistically, the choice here in the city isn't between a Democrat and a Republican. An actual Republican (Bloomberg was a Democrat who only became a Republican because the field was so crowded on the left) hasn't won a mayoral election in 24 years. The choice is a group of Democrats. The real election was the Democratic primary back in June, not the general election in November.

But, at least he has a plausible rationale - that threats of violence against minority officeholders is up and this personal connection to his security gives him more confidence. Not great, but not gratuitous corruption either.
