Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes arrested, charged in Jan. 6 conspiracy
Source: Washington Post
The 56-year-old, who was at the Capitol that day but has said he did not enter the building, is the most high-profile person charged in the investigation so far. He and 10 others were charged with seditious conspiracy, these people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
Rhodes was arrested Thursday, after a federal grand jury leveled new charges focusing on what prosecutors say is a core group of Oath Keepers adherents who allegedly planned for and participated in obstructing Congress on the day lawmakers certified President Bidens 2020 election victory.

Stewart Rhodes, the leader and founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia, was arrested on Thursday and charged with seditious conspiracy for organizing a wide-ranging plot to storm the Capitol last Jan. 6 and disrupt the certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.s electoral victory, federal law enforcement officials said.
The arrest of Mr. Rhodes was a major step forward in the sprawling investigation of the Capitol attack and the case marked the first time that prosecutors had filed charges of sedition. According to his lawyer, Jonathon Moseley, Mr. Rhodes was arrested at shortly before 1 p.m.
Mr. Rhodes, a former Army paratrooper who went on to earn a law degree at Yale, has been under investigation for his role in Jan. 6 since at least last spring when, against the advice of his lawyer, he sat down with F.B.I. agents for an interview in Texas. He was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, communicating by cellphone and a chat app with members of his team, many of whom went into the building. But there is no evidence that he entered the Capitol.
The Oath Keepers, along with the Proud Boys, have emerged as the most prominent far-right extremists to have taken part in the assault on the Capitol. Prosecutors have collected reams of evidence against them, including encrypted cellphone chats and recordings of online meetings. They have charged its members not only with forcing their way into the building in a military-style stack, but also with stationing an armed quick reaction force at a hotel in Virginia to be ready to rush into Washington if needed.

Roger Stones Latest Mess: His Oath Keeper Bodyguards Arrested in Capitol Attack
The arrests could cause new legal trouble for the longtime Trump adviser.
Dan Friedman
Reporter
Roger Stone has an Oath Keeper problem. In recent days the FBI arrested two men, Joshua James, the owner of a cleaning services company in Alabama, and Roberto Minuta, a Newburgh, New York, tattoo artist, for taking part in the seditious attack on the US Capitol. Both men are members of that far-right militia. They each were part of a group of Oath Keepers that provided security for Stone, the longtime Trump adviser, the day before the assault, when Stone was in Washington, DC, whipping up support for the January 6 protest. That brings to at least five the number of Oath Keepers arrested in relation to the attack who also appear to have guarded Stone at Stop the Steal events. The Justice Department has alleged that three of these militia members helped plan the Capitol onslaught and were part of a conspiracy to block Congress from certifying Joe Bidens victory.
This could create legal problems for Stone, a self-described political dirty trickster, who last year received a pardon from President Donald Trump related to his conviction for lying to Congress in 2017 during the Trump-Russia investigation. Prosecutors are reportedly investigating Stones communications with extremists involved in the Capitol attack. The arrested Oath Keepers will likely face pressure to cooperate with prosecutors and reveal any information they may possess about any involvement Stone or other Trump associates may have had in plans or preparations to invade the Capitol.
Stone has repeatedly denied having advance knowledge of the attack. He says he was not present at the January 6 rally held at the Ellipse and that he did not participate in the ensuing march on Congress by thousands of Trump supporters. He also maintains that he did not know the Oath Keepers who provided security for him at events in Washington, DC, and in Florida in the weeks before the attack.
The Oath Keepersa loosely organized far-right outfit composed of former law enforcement officers and military personnelprovided security for Stone at several events on January 5. And Minuta and James were part of that detail, which possibly included about a dozen members of the group. Minuta was arrested on Saturday in Newburgh, where last May he gained notoriety for refusing to follow COVID-19 restrictions and close a tattoo parlor he owns there. James was arrested Tuesday in Alabama. Both face charges related to entering the Capitol on January 6.

(128,839 posts)I don't think they would be willing to throw the country under the bus for a bunch of bottom-dwelling miscreants like this. But once you rise up into the halls of Congress and the members who participated, that is a whole other ballgame.

I still want to know how these thugs knew exactly where to go in the Capitol, i.e. Pelosis office, for instance.
As Maddow says, watch this space.

But it is Roger Stone and Oath keepers on January 6
https://news.yahoo.com/video-shows-long-time-trump-121138577.html
The ABC News video is the first time there is visual evidence that the militia group was also with him on the day of the insurrection.
Whether the Oath Keepers in the video were participants in Capitol riots, which resulted in five people's deaths, is unclear.

(157 posts)I'm watching live coverage of this man's house and neighborhood in Texas. It's a HUGE house in a very nice neighborhood in TEXAS! And he's a white man living in America! What did this country doing to HIM that would make him plan a treasonous attack and go all the way to D.C. to participate in it? Why not just live the privileged life he's been afforded and enjoy it? There are literally billions of people on this planet that would gladly trade places. Seriously, what am I missing?

(15,278 posts)the two impeachments.
I recall plenty of people brushing off Watergate as a "third-rate burglary", then Woodward and Bernstein connected the hush money payments to CREEP and all the different threads started coming together. It took over a year to happen.
The riot on 1/6 has kind of been seen as a one-off event by a bunch of revved up Trumpers, but it's clear now it was much more than that. The white supremicist groups used Trump for their own revolutionary ends maybe more than he used them for his own political gain, but they were also co-opted by Bannon and company. These are the two threads that now appear to be merging.
If the Jan 6th committee can get its public hearings going in primetime after the Olympics, what comes out will have the same political outcome as Watergate with the GOP being wiped out in the mid-terms.
