Free .gov Covid test site available NOW!

Source: The Hill

COVIDTests.gov went live on Tuesday in a “limited capacity” to work out any issues ahead of an official launch on Wednesday, the White House said.

However, there are limits. Each residential address is limited to four tests. And the tests will usually take seven to 12 days to ship, the White House said.

“We can’t guarantee there won’t be a bug or two,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday, but noted the site builds on the Postal Service’s existing website.

She said the official launch would take place "mid-morning" on Wednesday.

the fact that this is only happening now, two years after covid started is ridiculous. We need to stop being reactionary.

Those stable geniuses thought reported numbers would stay low if there weren't enough tests

I'm just a little disappointed at the current administration and what seems to be a more reactionary response. I remember here in San Diego when the vaccines started rolling out and how it was close to impossible to get a vaccine appointment. That eased up over a few months, but then all of our testing locations dwindled and it's been extremely difficult to schedule a COVID test here. I made an appointment for the soonest appointment a few weeks ago and the soonest I could book an appointment was 13 days later. Here we are two years into COVID and we're just now sending out 4 tests to each household, which is awesome, but... a little behind the curve. What if you have a household of more than 4 people? Then you're back to the luck of the draw for a COVID test appointment in a timely fashion, or hoping you get lucky and one of the handful of CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens have at home tests for purchase.

Daughter and boyfriend are in a communal type student housing. Central living and kitchen with bedroom/study suites for each. He tried to get a set ordered but only one person living in the apartment can order - that’s a glitch that will need to be addressed for college settings.

Got an order in just before 2:30 pm ET. Got the USPS confirmation email a few minutes after.

Using USPS's MASSIVE databases/tracking servers was the perfect place to go. No need to try to reinvent the wheel because the capacity is basically there and they have a record of every address anyway. As I understand it, they will also be offering phone orders for those without internet access and will be distributing to social service orgs to have for the transient population without fixed addresses..
