CLEVELAND Nina Turner, the progressive activist with close ties to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is mounting another campaign for Congress in Ohio.
The former state senator from the Cleveland area told NBC News this week that she wants a rematch with Rep. Shontel Brown, who beat Turner last year in a Democratic primary.
The same environment that motivated me to run before motivates me to run again, Turner, who co-chaired Sanders 2020 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, said in a telephone interview. The environment by which change needs to happen has not really percolated at this moment. I think that it's one thing for somebody to go and to vote the right way. But Greater Cleveland needs a fighter, and that's that's what I am.
Brown beat Turner decisively in the special primary and easily won the general election to succeed Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge in the overwhelmingly Democratic 11th Congressional District. The race, one of few on the ballot last year, was an ideological battle that attracted an influx of national attention and money, fueled in large part by Turners willingness to antagonize the Democratic establishment. Brown ran as a reliable backer of President Joe Biden.

How can this turn out any differently from last August's primary, especially with Shontel Brown doing a GREAT job as the incumbent Representative for OH-11?

(2,347 posts)Just quit and go home already, Nina. We don't need your loud, obnoxiousness in Congress. There's already enough of that coming from the other side from Bang Bang Barbie, Empty Green, Gonzo Gosar, Cowchip Roy, MoRon Brooks, et al, as it is.
The last thing we need is to have someone like them on OUR side of the aisle hurling the same kind of bombs, creating media distractions and allowing the media and Republicans to (hypocritically) say, "Look at the foul, incendiary language the Democrat (sic) party uses!"
We need a team player Nina, and you've demonstrated by your own words that you're incapable of being a team player.

(47,370 posts)would only give republicans more ammo to use against Democrats. Whenever anyone criticizes Marjorie Taylor Green, Matt Gaetz, or Paul Gosar, they'll play "I know I am, but what are you?" They'll shout louder and longer to drown out Democrats voices.
I've gotten the impression that once Turner got a taste of being in the limelight, she became addicted. She cannot stand to be ignored and she cannot control her mouth, a dangerous combination in politics.

(989 posts)I still cringe a little whenever AOC (usually) gets into a heated Twitter exchange with MTG or whomever.
Nina would be that, but a thousand times worse. She'd do nothing but cause drama that'd distract from serious discussions and propose ideas that don't have a sliver of a chance of becoming law.

(2,347 posts)And she usually gets the best of whomever she's in a Twitter battle with via humor and facts. And never goes off half-cocked.
With Nina, you have no such guarantees of any of that. To me, she's the equivalent of driving a dump truck through a nitroglycerin factory.

In my view we do not need people who divide Democrats, but unite them, and Turner is not that person

(42,862 posts)Will Turner have enough time (THIS TIME) to properly get her new "People's Party" registered so that it can appear on the Ohio ballots?
I remember LAST time she had to grudgingly run "as a Democrat" because her new "People's Party" couldn't get on the ballot because of some reason (missed deadline? not enough interest? not properly registered?)
In any case, they've had PLENTY of time to learn from previous mistakes and get all the paperwork filled-in properly and filed on time. So naturally we can expect her to run as a THIRD PARTY candidate since she lacks what it takes to be chosen in a DEMOCRATIC primary.

Someone acceptable to them will never win elected office except in areas that are already dark blue.

If she were elected, she'd probably have spent all of her time picking fights and seeking attention instead of doing anything productive.

(47,370 posts)Nina Turner is an attention-seeking disruptor. She doesn't really want to accomplish anything productive, she just wants to tear things down, preferably in front of a camera. Then blame everyone else when she doesn't succeed.

(47,370 posts)She got a taste of it years ago and now she's addicted. I think it is a common affliction among politicians, who often get caught up in their own self-importance. Maybe she didn't get enough attention as a child?

Nobody's in the mood for that populist revolution noise about how the evil corrupt corporate Democratic establishment is TERRIFIED of righteous True Progressives like Nina who are the only ones fighting for the working class/working families, etc. We know, we know, we know, we know, we've heard it a million times. Oh well, there'll be new vulgarities and slanders aimed at Democrats to add to "The Collected Insults of Nina Turner."
