Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has invoked the Emergencies Act for the first in time in Canada's history to give the federal government extra powers to handle ongoing blockades and protests against pandemic restrictions.
"It is now clear that there are serious challenges to law enforcement's ability to effectively enforce the law," Trudeau told a news conference Monday afternoon.
Trudeau said the measures will be geographically targeted and "reasonable and proportionate to the threats they are meant to address."

I was hoping he wouldn't do that.

(48,988 posts)Ford was sluggish, Ottawa mayor, police chief seemed weak. But key is that the Province and the Municipality had the whip hand, until the Act was invoked. They had the highway and street laws and powers, the nuisance bylaws, the child endangerment laws (province), etc.
However the police play a long game. The softly softly approach that people have been getting bent about has big payoffs:
1) Care is taken not to harm the child human shields being used.
2) They get to know the occupiers by face and habits and reactions. You can be sure they are all identified and databased. This information is invaluable when it come to timing and decoy operations and divide & conquer. It enables them to take down the command structure quickly when the time comes.
3) In the lead up, they can and have been increasing pressure. As they know the occupiers and they get to know the police, the police will be able to persuade some to leave early. It's a tactic of attrition, enable by knowledge (see pt 2).
