Queen tests positive for Covid

Source: The BBC

The Queen has tested positive for Covid, Buckingham Palace has said.

The palace said the monarch is experiencing mild "cold-like symptoms" but expects to continue "light duties" at Windsor over the coming week.

"She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines," the palace said in a statement.

The Queen had been in contact with her eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales, who tested positive last week.

3. I truly wish her well. She has looked quite frail since the death of Philip.

I have to think her platinum jubilee was a reason to keep going the past year, but after the scandal with Andrew and similarly, with Charles' charities she may simply be fading.

For other posters that want to turn this into a referendum on royalty in UK, let's give this woman (and this thread) a pass today, ok? Plenty of future threads to hash that out...

4. +1

For all her faults and the political issues at hand, she has been a very large figure on the world stage for a long time. At least she appeared as a decent person, can't imagine what it could have been like with someone like bojo in her role.

13. Seconding the second paragraph.

So far, people seem to be honoring your request to avoid pointificating about the issue of royalty in the UK, and I devoutly hope that continues.

Personally, I hate it when Americans start arguing about what the UK should do with its monarchy or whether it should have one. As far as I'm concerned, it's none of our damned business. And under the present circumstances, it would be downright be tacky.

EDITED TO ADD: Well, people not pontificating about the monarchy in this thread was nice while it lasted. *weary sigh*

5. Just saw a NYT breaking on this

Had a feeling that she may have gotten it from Charles.

Queen Elizabeth is infected with the coronavirus.

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II has been infected with the coronavirus, Buckingham Palace said on Sunday, becoming one of the world’s most prominent figures to battle the virus and deeply rattling the country she has led for seven decades.

The palace issued few details about the condition of the queen, who turns 96 in April. She met this month with her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, who was reinfected with the coronavirus and went into isolation. He last contracted a mild case of the virus in March 2020, as the pandemic was first engulfing Britain.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered a severe bout of Covid around the same time and ended up in an intensive care unit. But even that alarming episode paled next to the news that the queen, who has reigned for longer than most Britons have been alive, has contracted a potentially deadly disease.

Buckingham Palace has labored to protect the queen from exposure to the virus. She retreated to Windsor Castle in early 2020 with her husband, Prince Philip, and lived in virtual quarantine for more than a year. Elizabeth received a dose of a coronavirus vaccine in January 2021 at Windsor Castle, along with Philip. The palace has not confirmed any subsequent vaccine doses. Charles has said that he is fully vaccinated and boosted.

22. As many in Britain might say, Charles is well - and Camilla, better than she should be

In all seriousness though, healing thoughts and best wishes to the Queen.

She'll come smiling through I'm sure.

7. I'm sure she's been triple vaxed. Hopefully her age won't override that.

I believe she'll come thru it
And then use that as evidence that vaccines can SAVE YOUR LIFE.
Its still Ames me how people say "See, she still caught it" when NO ONE has ever said a vaccine was 100% going to keep you from getting it

11. At 96 that's not good at all

Why did the prince have to meet with her? I guess he didn't know he was infected when he met with her, at least I hope that.

It seems this Covid variant can get through most anything.

Just goes to show us all Covid doesn't care about wealth, privilege or inheritance.

My Canadian born mother was only 10 months younger than the queen, so they were of an age.
I remember several times in my childhood when the queen was on TV and my mom would make me watch with her.

You have the right to your opinion (of course), but personally, I am more than happy, as an American, to leave the matter of the British monarchy to those it directly concerns: the citizens of the UK and of the British commonwealth.

I wish the queen all the best with this bout of covid and hope she has a very mild case and makes a full and speedy recovery.

I claim an opinion about the British monarchy, our former colonizers.

After Liz, I hope the monarchy starts to fade and ends after Charles. The Windsors can retire to one of the homes they personally own.

30. Woops! Got the hyphen backwards.

As the queen isn't she HRM, beyond HRH which is used for heirs too?

As a plain or modern wife, she would probably use the hyphenated version, or use Ms. Windsor, her birth name. Mrs. Windsor would be her mother. My point is if you use Mrs you use your husband's name in some form. Otherwise you use Ms with your maiden name.

The poster who called her Mrs Windsor to reject her royal title gave her a sexist title, a married prefix with her maiden name. It irked me. I've always used Ms.

32. actually as I remember, the Queen holds a place much like our president only

with less power. the PM is actually leader of the major party. Then you have parliament elected with less gerrymandering than we have. And they have mayors etc. So they have a democracy that might actually work better than ours and the Queen is supposed to make sure that neither party gets over the other like the republicans have in recent years.

39. The queen's role is largely ceremonial

She really has no power. The power of the British monarchy has been greatly reduced over time.

There is no need for an inherited position + great inherited wealth that comes with that position. It's obscene imo.

the politicans like Trump. We could have used a Queen Elizabeth with him. ONe speech and he would have been toast.

25. I am sure that even if she's vaxxed, they can get her infusion treatments, etc.

At least if she chooses them, which I worry she might not -- especially as she had just used her Platinum Jubilee to help the people accept Camilla as their future Queen Consort. The future without her is definitely on her mind.

I worry she's lonely. My grandmother went through a horrible depression after her husband passed -- it's a loss that I've never had, but I know it hurts. Granny had us grandkids, though, and her job, and other things that eventually let her feel like she could keep on going without him. I know the Queen is not just a lady of leisure or anything, but I fear she's more isolated than Granny was.

Still, even though I'm pretty sure she's getting great medical care, wishing good thoughts her way. This virus is awful.

He didn't didn't seek treatment, and he tell anyone for months, until it was too late. They'd been married almost 70 years and he was 90 years old, he was ready to go. He passed less than a year after she did.

My father who is 94 and in hospice tested positive and went to hospital for several days. He was fully vaxed and boosted. Survived it just fine.

I'm sure the Queen has been fully vaxed and boosted and surely has MUCH better health care than my father has.
