'People's Convoy' begins circling Beltway for second day of pandemic-related demonstrations

Organizer acknowledges theres a passionate faction of the convoy that wants to head into the nations capital
After a brief delay, hundreds of trucks, cars and SUVs protesting the governments response to the pandemic arrived at the Capital Beltway during the noon hour Monday after leaving the Hagerstown Speedway Monday for a second day of protests.
Organizer Brian Brase said the group, which circled the Beltway twice on Sunday, has no plans to take their protest beyond the Beltway, but acknowledged theres a passionate faction of the convoy that wants to head into the nations capital.
A lot of people want me to say certain things and put this convoy into a certain direction, he said. Im not going to listen to all of them. Im going to listen to the people.
Brase, a 37-year-old truck driver from northwest Ohio, said Mondays delay was the result of security concerns.
There were concerns about people trying to come in here who didnt belong," he said, warning those who intend to cause harm, violence and disruption were not welcome.

(10,749 posts)There was a post earlier today referring to a twitter thread warning the rest of us that we should take these nutbags seriously. Noted.
Nevertheless, the mocking opportunities are just too great.
In any case, I still wear a mask in most public places - grocery stores, coffee shop, post office. Mask wearing may not be at its peak, but people are still wearing them.
So, today I went into said coffee shop. Grabbed my mask from the front seat, put it on, bought my coffee and muffin, and left. Took off my mask and went about my day.
Freedoms: Not infringed.
Political act: Not.
Trucker convoy: Not organized.
I mean, how difficult was that?
As for those convoys, someone's paying for them. I'm not talking about diesel (thought "they" - whoever "they" may be - may also be covering fuel costs). What was the cost of renting the spot they are calling their DC-area headquarters when they are not mindlessly and pointlessly driving around the beltway? Are the truckers themselves being paid? After all, they're not working, and yet they are still buying diesel and food. Someone - Russian oligarchs, RWNJ billionaires (Thiel, Uelein, Musk, Koch), Alex Jones, Steve Bannon - is picking up the tab. Notwithstanding the warning that we as a nation to take these buffoons seriously, the truckers themselves are useful idiots manipulated into eroding our democracy while filling the pockets of their paymasters.
Who are these truckers who can find the time not to actually work, and then undoubtedly whine about how they can't find whatever it is they want in the grocery store or Home Depot? Are there no jobs for truckers? Are they really truckers? Anyone check Craig'slist for ads for fake truckers?
Back to that warning - taking it seriously for a moment, it might be interesting to explore these events as the radicalization of a certain segment of the population.

I really think 2009-11 was just testing and practice. How exactly to manipulate votes and elections. How to get crazy candidates in office. How to mobilize a few million "grass roots patriots" into an army of thugs.
If we don't stop Putin's MAGAts, I hate to think how bad the next version will be.

As long as they avoid "harm, violence, and disruption", have at it.
