US gasoline prices rise again on talk of banning Russian oil

Source: AP

By DAVID KOENIG

Gasoline prices are pushing even farther above $4 a gallon, the highest price that American motorists have faced since July 2008, as calls grow to ban imports of Russian oil.

Prices at the pump were rising long before Russia invaded Ukraine and have spiraled faster since the start of the war. The U.S. national average for a gallon of gasoline has soared 45 cents a gallon in the past week and topped $4.06 on Monday, according to auto club AAA.

The price of regular broke $4 a gallon on Sunday for the first time in nearly 14 years and is now up nearly 50% from a year ago.

The price for gasoline in Europe is even higher, averaging 1.75 euros per liter last week, according to the European Commission, the equivalent of $7.21 per gallon.

Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and Total all report the biggest profits they've seen in eight years.

And, as big oil companies funnel cash back to investors and strengthen their balance sheets, they are taking their foot off the gas on green investment.

Withdrawal can be painful, but we will feel better in the long run.

Like the previous poster, I believe that unbridled greed is the biggest factor. It is a problem of living in an country where the market is controlled by a tiny percentage of the population for whom enough is never enough.

I can't access my place of employment without driving there. My car gets used for very little else. I despise driving, primarily because of the thoughtless louts I always seem to encounter on the road. It's stress I don't need in my life and wish I didn't have....but I need my job more than a stress-free existence.

Tue Mar 8, 2022, 02:26 AM
Mar 2022

“Perfect is the enemy of good”

Changing driving habits for some is virtually impossible, though we all can do something to reduce fossil fuel consumption that is killing the planet.

For me, saving the planet always the #1 priority. Only being concerned when gas prices are high is the problem brought on by capitalism. Because when gas prices are low, the motivation is then to consume more.

A-B-C…Always Be Concerned. 😂😂

Know what else is horrendously bad for the environment? Human poverty. Just take a gander at the developing world for proof.

The only people benefitting from these outrageously high fuel prices are our corporate masters. When the cost of fuel goes up, so does everything else, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

It is 2/3rds of a day of oil use in the world. And it is not pumped out at the snap of someone's fingers. So it has no effect on oil prices.

18. The US exports far more gasoline that the amount imported from Russia.
Mon Mar 7, 2022, 08:01 PM

From Forbes:

“In 2021, Russia accounted for 21% of all U.S. gasoline imports, with Canada second at 17%. By value, Russian imports increased 71.05%, which is slightly less than gasoline imports from the world, which increased 80.53%. The Russian total was $12.78 billion.

These are not, however, record years for gasoline imports, thanks to increased U.S. production brought on by hydraulic fracking.

Oil and gasoline are complicated markets, so it’s not as simple as flipping a switch, but it’s worth noting that the United States exported $84.94 billion of gasoline and other refined petroleum products in 2021, or about six times as much as those Russian imports.”

I don’t know where we send our gasoline, but we could consider exporting less.
