Russia Says They Won't Overthrow Zelensky, Occupy Ukraine
Source: Newsweek
Russia has said it does not intend to overthrow President Volodymyr Zelensky's government nor occupy Ukraine.
Using the Kremlin terminology for the war, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the goals of Russia's "special military operation" were "the protection" of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics in the Donbas region.
The areas in the eastern part of Ukraine have been the scene of conflict since 2014, following Russia's seizure of Crimea.
Russia was also pursuing the "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine, she said, and sought to eliminate the military threat Ukraine posed to Russia due to its ties with NATO.

But, I think we should cripple Russia until they get rid of Putin. He is a menace to the world. Perhaps a little strip-down of their nuclear weapons, too, in order to make it safer.

Another Russian general, Andrei Sukhovetsky, also a deputy commander of the 41st army, was reported killed at the end of February.
Ukraine says its forces have killed more than 11,000 Russian troops. Russia has confirmed about 500 losses.

(7,277 posts)What about NATO and the US?
At this point, I'd put money on the bed-wetters denying Ukraine NATO membership.
Strelnikov_
(7,772 posts)The first task is to get this turned off. If that requires a piece of paper saying NATO double promises Ukraine will not be allowed in NATO, so be it.
After the fighting is turned off, Ukraine gets flooded with defensive weaponry. When Russian leadership changes, Ukraine gets Crimea and the eastern regions back, or such.
Russia cannot project power. Their military is broken. However, they can still destroy a lot of Ukraine and kill a lot of Ukrainians in the process of losing.
And while you are throwing around names, I see a lot of chicken-hawk rhetoric lately around here. Reminds me of right-wingers during the gulf war. It's easy to say a country should keep on fighting when it is not you or your country doing the fighting.
War is a continuum that can spin out of control. It needs to be turned off. Then pick up the pieces afterward.
Happy Hoosier
(7,277 posts)Then I am not supportive.
Ukraine would be insane to not seek a defensive alliance at this point and NATO would be cowardly to promise it.
If Putin achieves his goals here we will get more of this in the future. I said so in 2014. I was right. I am saying so again.

(7,772 posts)If Ukraine can get the trial balloon floated the other day, claimed regions in the east and Crimea to the Russians, Ukraine neutrality (promise not to join Nato), they should take it.
Why? Because the longer this goes on, the more of their country will be destroyed and their citizens killed. And, primarily, because time is on their side.
Russia has revealed themselves to be a paper tiger from a conventional forces standpoint. Continuing sanctions, and the endemic corruption, will prevent any meaningful rebuilding of Russia's conventional capabilities from the sorry state it is in today. They have no way to project power.
The west, on the other hand, can flood Ukraine with defensive weaponry, being crew served anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems, and modern air defense capabilities.
Over time, Russian leadership will change. At that time, as part of the deal for the new Russia to be welcomed back into the fold economically, they have to deal over Crimea and the eastern provinces.
paulkienitz
(1,296 posts)and no longer threatens Kyiv, then Putin is still trapped in a quagmire and still at risk of a coup, which means that Ukraine may win without losing the territories at all.
On the one hand we have a quicker end to the fighting at the cost of Ukraine disappearing by inches, and on the other we have ongoing bloodshed but a chance at actually beating Putrin and undermining his dictatorship. And in the end, it won't be Zelensky who accepts or rejects the deal, but the armed citizens of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. If they keep shooting at the occupation force, how can Zelensky sell them out? I know that's where right-wing militias have been very pro-Putin, but I've also heard that the average Russian-speaking Ukrainian has swung sharply the other way after the invasion. If Zelensky tries to make that deal a lot of people are going to be very upset and very unwilling to live with it peacefully.
