'Just chaos:' 4 dead in Salem after driver crashes into homeless camp

Four people died early Sunday when a vehicle crashed into a homeless camp near Front and Division Streets just west of downtown, according to Salem police.
Two people died at the scene of the crash that occurred about 2 a.m., police said. Two others were taken to Salem Health hospital where they died. The driver also was taken to the hospital.
The camp is in a small triangle of trees and grass just west of Front Street NE where it begins to curve.
Nathan Rose said he and his girlfriend were in their tent at the northeast corner of ARCHES on Front Street when he heard two loud thuds. Rose said the sedan vehicle just missed his tent.

He said nearly 50 homeless people have died in the past two years, but this is the first incident involving this many people.

The problem seems to be growing faster than all efforts to help them.
