Army General Fired, Loses a Star After 'Counterproductive' Leadership

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Military.com

One of the Army's top logistics officers was fired and demoted after an inspector general investigation found he conducted "counterproductive leadership behaviors," the service announced.

Maj. Gen. Duane Gamble, formerly a three-star general, was investigated over allegations of racist behavior during his time as deputy chief of staff for logistics, a position commonly referred to as the G-4.

That investigation found that Gamble did not discriminate on the basis of race, but he still received a general officer memorandum of reprimand, or GOMOR, over leadership issues, according to Cynthia Smith, an Army spokesperson. GOMORs are largely seen as automatic career killers for officers and are rarely handed out to top leadership. It's unclear whether Gamble will be able to retire at his previous three-star rank, which he earned in September 2019.

Smith noted that Gamble's subordinates were "satisfied with his leadership," despite it being "counterproductive."

At the a tail end of the article at the link someone is quoted as saying that if he was a colonel, lt. colonel, major of captain he would've been separated from the army.

But because senior officers look out for each other he was allowed to stay in his position for a year while the investigation was going on, and his behavior was no secret for years before that.

At least his ass got demoted and he won't be getting a fourth star and continuing his racism.

spoke in derogatory terms of Black general officers. The article makes that clear.

That sentence..."wasn't racist - and subordinates 'satisfied'...", is bullshit, an unnecessary attempt to placate. It shouldn't even be there. Some editor dropped the ball.

the examples in the article are offensive but the comments, all by people who don't know Gamble, say he didn't deserve the criticism and the one of the Black guys mentioned is the problem.

Sad.

he was lower profile but once he got higher up his attitudes got magnified and other general officers, Black generals, his peers, didn't feel the need to have to bite their tongues about racism in their face.

They helped get his ass demoted and sent a message that he might as well retired because getting a GOMOR is a career killer.

His next command will be something less exciting than logistics. Which, since putZin's war, is a bunch more exciting than it ever was before. Always has been critical.

Undoubtedly he will be held up by the deplorables as an example of a "woke" military shooting itself in the foot.

Three sources who spoke with Task & Purpose, including a recently retired Army colonel, described a harmful work environment which one source described as “racist and toxic.” The general was known to frequently degrade subordinates and peers alike, and regularly made inappropriate comments during staff meetings. This article is based on interviews with those three sources, all of whom have direct knowledge of Gamble’s remarks and the culture within the G-4 office, as well as documents and emails outlining the allegations against Gamble while he served as one of the Army’s most senior logisticians.
