Abortion restriction bill signed by Florida Gov. DeSantis

Source: AP

By ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban into law Thursday as the state joined a growing conservative push to restrict access ahead of a U.S. Supreme Court decision that could limit the procedure nationwide.

The new law marks a significant blow to abortion access in the South, where Florida has provided wider access to the procedure than its regional neighbors.

The new law, which takes effect July 1, contains exceptions if the abortion is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality. It does not allow for exemptions in cases where pregnancies were caused by rape, incest or human trafficking. Under current law, Florida allows abortions up to 24 weeks.

“This will represent the most significant protections for life that have been enacted in this state in a generation,” DeSantis said as he signed the bill at the “Nación de Fe” (“Nation of Faith”), an evangelical church in the city of Kissimmee that serves members of the Latino population.

but this is a 2022 tone deaf comment. Men can absolutely get pregnant. Please reconsider your phrasing.

Thank you. This is accuracy of language. Language is a fluid and evolving medium that we must be intentional about staying on the forefront otherwise it becomes (usually unintentionally) a hurtful weapon.

If it were just Black women, or Latinas, or Asian women, the Religious Right would.not.care.

Church-going white women have abortions.

Preachers and politicians are.not.qualified. to make medical decisions for women, or girls, or anyone but themselves. Doctors consider viability at 26 weeks, give or take. Roe gets it right.

Fetal viability & survival rates
@ 24 weeks ~50%
@ 23 weeks ~25%
@ 22 weeks >~5%

The State has zero business in any woman's pants. Most miscarriages happen in the first trimester: why people don't make pregnancy public during the non-showing first three months.

Once the pregnancy takes, the state has a vested interest in The Mother, who is a sentient being, not her non-viable fetus. In the event of emergency, save the Woman, like Jewish law demands.

The forced birth trolls would have us believe women wait until labor pains strike then abort at full term. THat's not happening, anywhere. Women with third trimester terminations are very ill with very serious medical issues, or they've discovered fetal abnormalities incompatible with life outside the womb.

More White Men making laws for other people that don't apply and won't ever apply to themselves. But it's not about keeping the women in line at all....

THey've overstepped, and women are pissed.
