Pope offers to meet Putin, still waiting to hear back

Source: AP

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis told an Italian newspaper he had offered to travel to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin to try to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and suggested the invasion might have been provoked by NATO’s eastward expansion.

Francis said he made the offer about three weeks into Russia’s invasion, via the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, but has yet to hear back.

Popes for decades have sought to visit Moscow as part of the longstanding effort to heal relations with the Russian Orthodox Church, which split with Rome more than 1,000 years ago. But an invitation has never been forthcoming.

“Of course, it would be necessary for the leader of the Kremlin to make available some window of opportunity. But we still have not had a response and we are still pushing, even if I fear that Putin cannot and does not want to have this meeting at this moment,” Francis was quoted as saying by the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

They both seem to have a lot in common with the Dancing Supremes.

The Supremes have more in common with an ancient religious priest and a brutal dictator then with most Americans.

Putin started this war to re-establish the Soviet sphere of influence and has shown no willingness to end it until he gets what he wants.

"and suggested the invasion might have been provoked by NATO’s eastward expansion."

More BS of trying to placate the tyrant. God, did we learn nothing from Munich 1938.

No.

Also this comment in this similar article has me worried:

Francis veered toward conspiracy theory as he blamed the international community for instigating the war. “You cannot think that a free state can make war on another free state,” he said. “In Ukraine, it seems that it was others who created the conflict. I am pessimistic but we must do everything possible to stop the war.” The pope then said that in a state visit to Rome by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, he was told “the Russians have a plan, that everything will end on May 9” without giving any further explanation. May 9 is the day Russia celebrates its liberation and the end of World War II.

Uh, I thought the Vatican moth balled the Nazi Pope! Putin is an authoritarian kleptocratic racketeer. This was a war of aggression by a tyrant to pilfer a neighboring country and bring back the glory days of the Soviet Republic. It also polished his place in history as Joseph Stalin's natural heir. And it couldn't happen to a more deserving homicidal maniac war criminal.
