Jill Biden pays surprise visit to Ukraine, meets first lady

UZHHOROD, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. first lady Jill Biden made an unannounced visit to western Ukraine on Sunday, holding a surprise Mother’s Day meeting with the nation’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, as Russia presses its punishing war in the eastern regions.

Biden traveled under the cloak of secrecy, becoming the latest high-profile American to enter Ukraine during its 10-week-old conflict with Russia.

“I wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” Biden told Zelenska. “I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine.”

The first lady traveled by vehicle to the town of Uzhhorod, about a 10-minute drive from a Slovakian village that borders Ukraine. She spent about two hours in Ukraine.

First lady Jill Biden, in Eastern Europe to show American support for its NATO allies, made a surprise visit to Ukraine Sunday, where she met with that nation's first lady.

Biden's motorcade crossed into Ukraine from Slovakia, where earlier in the day she toured refugee aid stations.

In Ukraine, she visited a public school in the city of Uzhhorod, where she met privately with the first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, for about half an hour.

14. The former FLOTUS and TFG would have been received by Putin on a day like today instead.

If not for the groundswell of democratic voters that decided the 2020 election was important enough to make a change like we're seeing today, things would have been very different.

GOTV and stress to all voters to vote as though their lives depended upon it. Putin will not stop with Ukraine. We know this now. If not for Biden and democrats, Putin would already be on Europe's doorstep. Ukraine wouldn't have a fighting chance.
