House Democrats pass bill against gas price gouging with no Republican votes

Source: UPI News

May 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. House on Thursday passed a bill to prevent gasoline price gouging bill without a single Republican vote in favor. The vote was 217-207.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Kim Schrier, D-Wash., and Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., would make it illegal to sell gas at an excessive price during an energy emergency.

"At a time when people in my district and across the country are feeling the pain of high prices at the gas pump, Congress needs to be doing all we can to bring down costs," Schrier said in a statement.

Schrier said the FTC needs to have the power to investigate and crack down when there's evidence of real gouging.

they have only been about making Dems look ineffective as a first and primary priority, tax cuts for wealthy, and stirring up hate, fear and hysteria. Nothing else. Certainly nothing to benefit people.

Also, there should be a tax penalty for stock buybacks and a tax credit for real, non-executive wage increases.

They need to prance up and down the boulevard in a provocative manner. It does us no good to be right unless we rub the repuQs’ noses in it publicly and splashily.

everyone will remember high gas prices, but not have any clue why, and it will be easy to blame Biden and Democrats.

Problem is-- they are largely right.

Murphy Statement on the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act

Washington, May 19, 2022 | 1 comments

WASHINGTON—U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 7688, the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act:

“Like my colleagues, I want to lower the price American families pay at the gas pump. Our constituents are hurting, and we want to make things better for them. But this bill takes the wrong approach. The reason that gas prices are rising is demand exceeds supply, and so the way to bring down prices is to increase supply. If this bill becomes law, it could further reduce supply.

“At best, this bill is a distraction that won’t actually address the problem. At worst, it could make the problem more severe. As economist Larry Summers put it, this legislation ‘can cause and contrive all sorts of shortages.’

“It’s well past time that Congress and the President take concrete action to lower inflation. A good place to start would be to immediately repeal the Trump-era tariffs on a wide range of imported products and to pass a bipartisan version of the China competition bill, which has been pending in Congress for nearly a year and which—if enacted—will help curb inflation and unsnarl supply chains.”
