'Shame on you': Pritzker, Lightfoot criticize Abbott after remarks about Chicago gun laws

Source: ABC 7 Chicago

In the wake of Tuesday's school shooting that killed at least 19 students and two teachers in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott slammed Chicago gun laws Wednesday, saying the city's approach is "not a real solution."

Many are questioning why the 18-year-old shooter was able to buy the AR-15, as well as tactical gear, that is said to have been used in the deadly mass shooting.

I hate to say this, but there are more people shot every weekend in Chicago than there are in schools in Texas. And we need to realize that people who think that, well maybe if we just implement tougher gun laws, its gonna solve it," Abbott said. "Chicago and LA and New York disprove that thesis. And so, if you're looking for a real solution, Chicago teaches that what you're talking about is not a real solution. Our job is to come up with real solutions that we can implement."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker took to Twitter in response to Abbott's comments, saying, "Shame on you....You are lying about Chicago and what actually perpetuates gun violence. The majority of guns used in Chicago shootings come from states with lax gun laws."

Beto's only two % points down right now. He could win.
And wouldn't it be a shame if Beto became the first Democratic governor since 1994, Ann Richards' last year in office.
And if Beto wins the Governorship there'll be a lot of concern with the GQP taking Texas in the Presidential race of 2024.
If the Dem. nominee won Texas and its 40 EVs Steve Karnacki should just say the Dems. win as soon as Texas goes for them.
The last time Texas voted Dem. for President was Jimmy Carter. It was also the Westernmost to go Dem., excepting Hawaii.
How things change. Dems. have the entire West Coast and have more EVs than the Rs in the Mountain West.

Because they like the guns used in mass shootings.

Chicago is right on Indiana's border. A red state with lax gun laws.

I live in DC but go to Maryland to buy gas and liquor because it's cheaper. Marylanders come to DC to buy beer from grocery stores. Nobody is stopping cars on state borders to see if you're smuggling guns.

They really have it both ways, these gun staters. They are the source of the guns that cause havoc in Chicago. These are sold legally in states with lax gun laws, including Texas, then make there way into the illicit pipeline to Chicago. Then Texas has the gall to blame us for the guns that come from Texas? Fuck's sake.

We have huge 'gun shows', which wind up supplying a large portion of guns used in homicides all over the country.

total in TX stand at 4,164 compared to 1,745 in IL. Overall, Texas has higher mortality rate, teen birth rate, divorce rate, and WAY higher COVID death rate.

Illinois isn't even ranked in the top ten states for homicide.

...that part of the Chicago metropolitan area is part of Indiana, where gun laws are way more relaxed.

The problem isn't the laws in Chicago - it's Chicago's location, with guns being far more easily acquired nearby.

37 to 2.

And Texas has had triple the number of gun violence incidents in its schools compared to the whole state of Illinois.

There were 18 more people killed in gun violence in Texas this past weekend than in Chicago.

In Chicago, the response is "one is too many, let's do something about it," and they do. Abbott's response, "well it could have been worse."

...Uvalde just lost 0.125% of it's population. (Population about 15,600.)
For Chicago to lose an eighth percent of it's population, takes 4,000 gun deaths. In 2021, Chicago had 800 gun homicides.
Unsurprisingly, Abbott understands zero about proportion. Besides 800÷52 does not equal 20. And, all shooting deaths don't happen on weekends. So, his statement is patently false.
