Egypt Displays Trove of Newly Discovered Ancient Artifacts

Source: AP News

CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt on Monday displayed a trove of ancient artifacts dating back 2,500 years that the country's antiquities authorities said were recently unearthed at the famed necropolis of Saqqara near Cairo. According to Mostafa Waziri, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the find includes 250 painted sarcophagi with well-preserved mummies inside, as well as 150 bronze statues of ancient deities and bronze vessels used in rituals of Isis, the goddess of fertility in ancient Egyptian mythology, all from the Late Period, about 500 B.C.

A headless bronze statue of Imhotep, the chief architect of Pharaoh Djoser who ruled ancient Egypt between 2630 B.C. and 2611 B.C was also displayed. The artifacts will be transferred for a permanent exhibit at the new Grand Egyptian Museum, a mega project still under construction near the famed Giza Pyramids, just outside Cairo.

The Saqqara site is part of a sprawling necropolis at Egypt's ancient capital of Memphis that includes the Giza Pyramids and the smaller pyramids at Abu Sir, Dahshur and Abu Ruwaysh. The ruins of Memphis were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1970s...

May 30, 2022, Archeologists near Cairo have discovered hundreds of ancient Egyptian coffins and a huge cache of bronze statues of deities at a cemetery in Saqqara. The painted wooden coffins were found intact in burial shafts and contained mummies, amulets and wooden boxes.

Some of the bronze statues found were of the gods Anubis, Amun, Min, Osiris, Isis, Nefertum, Bastet and Hathor, and a headless statue of the architect Imhotep who built the Saqqara pyramid, Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said on Monday. The 250 coffins, 150 bronze statues and other objects dated to the Late Period, about 500 BC, the ministry said. I shall not speak of the railway, for it is like any other railway—I shall only say that the fuel they use for the locomotive is composed of mummies three thousand years old, purchased by the ton or by the graveyard for that purpose, and that sometimes one hears the profane engineer call out pettishly, "D--n these plebeians, they don't burn worth a cent—pass out a King … - Mark Twain - Innocents Abroad

The original Food and Drugs Act of 1906 kinda shut it down. The were grinding up entire mummies and making pills and potions, and stuff. Hell, the were even distilling the bodies to produce aromatic oils; there was serious money to be made from Egyptian graveyards, Baby!

I’ve always said that if I could be *anybody* in the world, I’d want to be Howard Carter on
November 4, 1922, when he opened that door to King Tut’s tomb!! What a moment!!
